Cruz: Ron Paul appealed to youth through principle, even though he’s “not Brad Pitt”

Former Rep. Ron Paul is 77 years old and no movie star, but the Texan was still the favored GOP candidate of young Americans during the last election, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said on Wednesday night.

Speaking at an America’s Future Foundation dinner, Cruz mentioned that the two politicians in modern times who inspired young people most were Paul and former President Ronald Reagan.

“When you think about the last election cycle, which Republican inspired more young people than anyone else?” Cruz asked the audience. “Ron Paul.”

“The man’s a septuagenarian,” he joked as the crowd laughed. ”It’s not like — I love Ron Paul, but he’s not Brad Pitt!”

Cruz stressed that the reason politicians like Reagan and Paul captured the attention of youth was because they stood on principle. He dismissed the idea that Republicans needed to back young candidates in order to appeal to youth, saying instead that conviction and leadership were more important.

The Senator also added that utilizing social media — and doing so with strong messaging — is crucial in the modern, technologically-driven age.

“It is a tool, it is a force-multiplier, but you got to have a message to being with,” he said.

But outside social media, Cruz said that the most powerful way to reach out to young people was person-to-person contact.

“Each one of you has the ability to communicate directly and to echo out to others…” he closed. “It matters more than a thousand TV commercials.”

Too bad Reagan turned out to be all talk.

I'd gladly back him in 2016 if Rand doesn't run.

Id consider it if he divorces his Goldman Sachs executive wife first. No way will I support a GS exec as first lady and a more hawkish foreign policy than Rand's, regardless of what Cruz says in 2013. This is the Ron Paul Forum after all. Banks and foreign policy are sorta important around here.

I hope he never divorces his wife and remains faithful to her until they both die.

Cruz's foreign policy isn't very hawkish. He was against intervention in Libya and is against arming Syrian rebels.

Cruz doesnt have a foreign policy and intends to lie if he goes after the big prize similar to what Bush did. His wife and connections tell you what the policy will be: death, destruction and profiteering. Cruz isn't some selfless libertarian, liberty loving guy. He's a filthy rich Harvard lawyer with serious connections (isn't one of those in the White House now?).

If Cruz was president he'd be exactly the same as Obama/Bush and you'd be weeping every night. Same shit.

I'm definitely not sold on Cruz's foreign policy, but I love the way that he's so bold and fearless. We need people in Congress who stand strong and simply refuse to back down. I have a lot of respect for Cruz at this point.

I don't. He's a liar and a fraud. The way he went after Hagel... you respect that? Insinuating he's being financed by dictators?

Cruz said flat out that Hagel was "less of a fan of the military" since he had concerns about Iraq in 2006 and this was a cause to block his nomination.

Are you kidding? This guy is a complete fool and indulging in the most puerile nonsense.

There was more to Hagel than just the way he seemed on foreign policy. He's not a good guy.

He's saying the right things so far. Some of his connections are questionable though so don't get too enamored.

So are everyone who runs for office. At least with someone like Cruz you shouldn't have to be worried about being asked about Truthers or White Supremacists.

I didn't agree with him on that, either. I also keep in the back of my mind the PAC he started that Jr. Bush now heads and who his wife works for. However, for the most part he has been voting the closest to our ideals than most any other Senator besides Rand.

I'm not sure what you thinks it gains us to call him names.

How exactly is Hagel good? He's been advocating all kinds of foreign intervention since he's been Secretary of Defense. He's also a big supporter of international organizations and is on record as wanting to bring back the draft.

I have a lot of respect for Cruz' politics so far. I don't respect him as a person. Too many people confuse personal character with rhetoric. Cruz is helping right now, no doubt, but it's SOP for a person with good rhetoric but shady connections to inject themselves as a co-opter into a growing movement.

Hmmm....sounded like you just compared a GS exec as a bedmate with loosely associated alleged donators. Hardly an apt comparison. No doubt everyone has skeletons but come on.

Meh Cruz...not much of a fan. I hope Joe can win this time up in AK as that will be Rand's closest ally and I suspect, even better than Rand.

How would he be better than Rand? I heard that he was a supporter of the war in Iraq. If Miller supported the war in Iraq and Rand opposed it, how exactly is Miller better than Rand?
