Coup d'Etat in Turkey Breaking?

No, his narrative is dependent on us wanting to attack Syria - the Trump part is just speculation about the timing, it's not necessary for the rest of the narrative.

STOP THE THREAD! DANNNO HAS TO DOUBLE DOWN ON HIS EMBARRASSMENT!

The only thing making it imperative, in smitty's view, that Egypt be distracted from Syria right this minute is the possibility that Trump would get elected and refuse to attack Syria, even though Trump has promised to attack ISIS wherever it can be found and it was founded in Syria.

Do we understand now why that is a key domino in his theory? Can people get back to the thread yet, or must we keep looking at the whole world through the TrumpLens until he finally loses and we can change the blessed subject at long last?

So who is going to come out on top here? Media seems clueless. I'd guess the military.

How do you know that?

Because if it isn't that, then it couldn't be what's-his-name shaking the world.

I admit that most of the turmoil in the world is caused by the CIA. But it surely does take a whopping big dose of American arrogance to assume that every last scrap of it is caused by the U.S.

Erdogan has been trying to increase his powers for years now. Plus he has been messing the country up pretty bad. Looks like it is a serious effort to kick him out. Hit when Erodgan was out of town on holiday.

Warplanes and helicopters roared over Ankara and explosions could be heard there. Reuters reporters saw a helicopter open fire. State-run news agency Anadolu said military helicopters had fired on the headquarters of the intelligence agency.

Reuters journalists saw tanks open fire near the parliament building in Ankara, which they had surrounded.

Airports were shut, access to Internet social media sites was cut off, and troops sealed off the two bridges over the Bosphorus in Istanbul, one of which was still lit up red, white and blue in solidarity with victims of the Bastille Day truck attack in France a day earlier.

Soldiers took control of TRT state television, which announced a countrywide curfew and martial law. An announcer read a statement on the orders of the military that accused the government of eroding the democratic and secular rule of law. The country would be run by a "peace council" that would ensure the safety of the population, the statement said.

TRT later went off the air.

Anadolu said the chief of Turkey's military staff was among people taken "hostage" in the capital Ankara. CNN Turk also reported that hostages were being held at the military headquarters.

NOT A TINPOT COUP

A senior EU source monitoring the situation said: "It looks like a relatively well orchestrated coup by a significant body of the military, not just a few colonels. They've got control of the airports and are expecting control over the TV station imminently. They control several strategic points in Istanbul.

"Given the scale of the operation, it is difficult to imagine they will stop short of prevailing. It's not just a few colonels," the source repeated.

Would recommend (if you like following Foreign Policy nuance) that you might take a listen
to this (posted earlier/now recorded) joint appearance of Lavrov and Kerry
announcing the 'possible' agreement on military and humanitarian efforts in Syria.
This is (in Statecraft parlance) hoped as a capitulation; a 'shift' in US 'rockhard' policy...
and NOT (as some had speculated) an 'ultimatum' being delivered by Kerry to Putin.

begins @ 1:52:40

===================
UPDATE:
Having listened to both statements and the Q & A's (took awhile)
my conclusion is: absolute intransigence
I can detect NO 'shift' in polices... absolutely none. Not US. Not Russia.
sorry... wish I had better news.
Message for the Syrian people: Hang on to WHATEVER Govt you have left...
lest you become like the Libyans. Good luck. Stay safe.

LOL leave it to the Trump trolls to get him involved into this thread. I doubt Trump even knows where Turkey is.

Obviously it's a bit early to speculate but I have a feeling that the Islamists didn't like the recent warming of ties with Israel. I doubt the warming of relations with Russia played as big of a factor as the warming of relations with Israel did.

why is it a coup and not a revolution? words matter

Military overthrowing government is a coup. Civilians overthrowing government is a revolution. AP stylebook sez so.

Looks like the coup might be in trouble now. Time will tell I suppose.

No the main timing issue tying this in to Syria is the Kerry meeting with Putin.

Why now in the grander scheme of things? Well, why not now? Mars just recently went direct, it's time for war from a astrological standpoint, I've been posting about it:

http://www.ronpaulforums.com/showthread.php?496584-Presidential-Candidate-Astrologies

And maybe it has something to do with Trump being elected soon, or maybe not, but the majority of the post did not rest on that assumption, it was just something he threw in there.

Turkish army group announces takeover on TV

An army group in Turkey says it has taken over the country, with soldiers at strategic points in Istanbul and jets flying low in the capital, Ankara.

A statement read on TV said a "peace council" now ran the country and there was a curfew and martial law.

But PM Binali Yildirim said the situation was largely under control and a no-fly zone was declared over Ankara.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would overcome what he called an uprising by a minority.

In the last few minutes, Mr Erdogan's plane has landed at Istanbul airport
, government sources say.

Two large explosion were also heard near Istanbul's central Taksim Square.

Earlier, there were reports of blasts at parliament building in Ankara. MPs are believed to be hiding in shelters.

CNN Turk broadcaster was reportedly taken over by soldiers, and its live broadcast was cut.

It is unclear who the plotting army group is or its level of support. Some top army officials are said to be detained.

People across Turkey are very confused and surprised, the BBC's Katy Watson in Istanbul says.

Interesting to see what happens with Erdogan now that he is in Istanbul.

Apparently Erdogan is back in power. Military generals that were rebelling their helicopter shot down. Turkish forces moving out of Iraq. A lot of military arrested. People on both sides killing each other. Planes and helicopters going down over the city. Parliament and Intelligence buildings bombed.
