For those that don't know the Costa Rica Libertarian Party has made great success, more so than any other Libertarian Party around the world.

True, but it's definitely NOT libertarian in the way we know libertarian to be. In fact I think they even have their own form of universal healthcare!! :(

Some interesting facts:

I'll take it.

Partido Movimiento Libertario ("Libertarian Movement Party or PML" (from wikipedia)

We represent hundreds of thousands of Costa Rican citizens from all walks of life, tired of politics, parties, traditional politicians, and the country's deteriorating situation. We want an orderly, modern nation where everyone has the opportunity to flourish in an environment of freedom, responsibility, and respect for the rights and dignity of all our citizens. For this, there is no doubt that we need to make serious decisions that only libertarians are willing to make with a firm hand that show wisdom, prudence, and intelligence in developing policies. It is not enough to complain. We must act and compete to win political power so that we can regain control over our lives and realize the promise of freedom. If not now, when? If not us, who? This is the purpose of the Libertarian Movement Party.

-Break up of all of the state-owned monopolies and eliminate legal barriers on private economic activities

-Provide a low flat tax for the income produced within the country, eliminate many of the current taxes

-Free trade -- eliminate tariffs and barriers to the entry of goods

-Freedom to choose the currency that consenting individuals want

-Freedom to choose your own doctor within the social security system

-Strengthen individual pension accounts

-Freedom of parents to choose schools through vouchers

-Respect for private property

-Reduction of the participation of government in the economy

-Freedom of speech and press

-Respect for the sexual preferences of the people

-Respect for the religious beliefs (or lack thereof) of the people

-Defense of the right to own guns to defend private property and life

-Transfer of responsibility from central government to local governments

it's very similar to our libertarianism but not exactly the same. in any case, it's still awesome and freedom oriented

I'll take it.

It's not self-ownership, just being run by various groups of thugs instead of one centralized one. Why not go for NO income tax instead of a flat tax? Theft is theft whether it's flat or a sliding scale.

True, but electoral politics isn't philosophy. If you can't find a majority of people to agree with you, all your good ideas won't be worth a bucket of spit. Increase freedom and give the voters a stake in continuing to increase it and someday there might be political support for dumping the income tax.

Guevara is running on getting rid of ICE (the telecommunications monopoly so bad that I can't find words for it, oh wait...yes I can:

The Real Enemy of Costa Rica
(Note: ICE is the state-owned monopoly that controls electric, telephone, cellular, and internet service in Costa Rica. One stipulation of the CAFTA agreement was to break up ICE and allow competition.)

Let there be no doubt, ICE has always been an impediment to providing the good service necessary to building our economy and creating jobs. Now, in their fear of competition and the will of the Costa Rican people, they have become not only an inconvenience, but a dangerous enemy of freedom.

In October 2007, Costa Ricans came together and voted for good service, competition, and freedom from this bullying, incompetent monopoly. But instead of accepting the will of the people, ICE has sought to increase their power, their prices, and indeed, there control over what we may think, how we may act, and what services we may access so that they may avoid the competition and responsibility that Ticos demand of them.

This has been seen in many ways. They demand the right to control and regulate, or shut down, the internet cafes that give travelers and many Ticos internet access that they would not otherwise have. They demands hundreds of millions in public money. They attempt to prevent competitors from entering the market and threaten to ban the ones that do. They raise rates at a time when it is harder for families to make ends meet and demand payment or threaten to immediately end service. They refuse to sell pre-paid phones to non-citizens and make the pre-paid program so undesirable as to negate any value. All while providing service that is so bad as to be a joke among developed and developing countries alike.

Perhaps most insipid of all is their new demand that they should control the awarding of IP addresses. This corrupt and deceitful maneuver will allow ICE to decide who gets a website or internet access and under what restrictions. This is a formula for denying free speech and shutting up political opponents. These are the acts of an Ortega or a Chavez. It is the opposite of what voters demanded in the referendum. This is what happens when politicians are allowed to control things that the market should decide. Decisions are based on what is best for the politicians and their cronies instead of what is best for the people.

There is no place for this kind evil dealing in a free society. Enough is enough! The time for change is now.

Committee to Elect Otto Guevara

The other issues here are corruption (much of which relates to ICE and the other monopolies) and crime (FARC has deep ties to CR and people are freaked since it became known).

These are the things candidates for the CR presidency have to address.

The British Libertarian Party platform is similar. Freedom is so lost in those countries that a socialist government would be considered a radically libertarian government.

It looks like a decent platform. Can`t say I like it all, but it is pretty radical. Gun ownership, monetary freedom, lower taxes, elimination of tarrifs. Pretty nice.

change can't happen all at once; as long as he is better then its a start. it took a long time for governments to grow this large-and will take a long time to dismantle the beast

So true. In some european countries there is not even a libertarian-like party, so go figure.

Any other guests? I'm just not very excited about the Costa Rica guy.

Very true. Insistence on perfection before you start is the enemy of making progress in getting there.
