Again, they already cancelled the first day of a convention because a hurricane hit a state that they were no where near. They would totally cancel for a hurricane coming right at them (not saying they will, but more that I would not put it past them)
The reason they delayed was because two of the keynote speakers (President Bush and Vice President Cheney) cancelled their appearance so that they could be at the disaster area if necessary- remember Gustav was expected to hit New Orleans, and the Republican Party wanted to do everything in their power to stop comparisons between Gustav and Katrina. Senator McCain was considering accepting the nomination from the disaster zone if things went south, and a lot of Republicans were urged to help those evacuating.
Tell me about it!! They ALL tend to converge at the scene for their photo-ops with their sleeves rolled up, hoisting a case of bottled water to a National Guardsman and then they leave, hoping everyone feels warm and fuzzy about them. meh.Yes, because all one needs in the middle of a natural disaster is a pontificating, self-serving, photo-op seeking politician.

Yeah, his inability to actually be of any help was the main reason McCain didn't go (in retrospect that was a bad decision. It could easily have played very well in the press and it would have given McCain a step up on an Obama that didn't go try to help. Poor political choice there. It created a quite a bit of tension within his team). President Bush made the right choice to cancel his speech, though.
That hurricane looks as nasty as a certain snow storm in Maine.
