These are our "betters"... people who couldn't argue their way out of a wet paper bag. This is some late Roman Empire stuff, which is appropriate because most of the culture at this point is also some late Roman Empire stuff.
Western Civilization, for all of its warts and flaws, was the single greatest development in human history... and in basically 4 generations humanity have managed to squander it. Our species managed to crawl out from the caves and develop a social paradigm that created the most prosperous and FREE environment to cultivate human flourishing, and within less than 200 years "we" have managed to trample it under foot, for some sado-masochistic reason. For some reason, our species insists on reverting to poverty and warfare.
Maybe our betters are right... maybe we aren't worth salvaging.
Democracy is a failure. In so many races, all we have are the worst of the worst. The sh!t rises to the top. It's like good choices aren't even allowed.
In the California US Senate primary, we have 4 main choices (that have been pushed by the media, and who were allowed to participate in "debates"). All are terrible. There is one Republican, Steve Garvey, a former baseball player, who the establishment would love. He would be like Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski. Adam Schiff couldn't be a worse choice. Barbara Lee from the OP? Lol. Katie Porter? Another idiot Marxist.
We've never tried actual democracy. All we've had is a limited suffrage, then universal suffrage system of representative-based republicanism.
So, we can blame parties, and we can blame representative government, but I don't think we can blame democracy.
I'd prefer to live under almost any other system of governance than a pure democracy.
But is what we have superior?
Peak socialism is 200 billionaires waiting in line for 2 loaves of bread.
