BREAKING NEWS: THAD McCOTTER MAY GET KICKED OFF THE BALLOT!

The first thing I do when I hear about a supposed liberty candidate is search the FEC disclosure database and see if they have donated to either of Dr. Paul's presidential campaigns. I don't see any donations from Bentivolio. Not a deal breaker; but it sure would make me more convinced if I saw his name in there. eg: Amash donated to Paul in 2007 prior to his congressional run.

I do that too. :)

Thad McCotter's 'monumental mess'

More fallout from GOP Rep. Thad McCotter's nominating petition screwup, which has not only put a seemingly safe Republican House seat at risk but also jeopardized the Michigan GOP's advantage in the congressional delegation.

From The Detroit News:

Write-ins aren't easy in Michigan and rarely succeed. State law forbids the use of ballot stickers that can be handed out beforehand to supporters. Voters must remember to write in McCotter's name. That's a lot to ask in a year when the ballot will be jam-packed.

I talked to McCotter last night. He was in Hawaii finishing a congressional trip to Asia. He seemed frustrated and incredulous but not overly rattled.

"I'm not sure what happened," said McCotter, who made a brief presidential run last fall. "We used the same team of volunteers we always do and handled everything the same way. This isn't our first go-round."

But he was resigned to the reality that his petitions would be ruled invalid, and said he'd figure out the next steps when he returned to Michigan Monday...

This is a monumental mess. Getting 1,000 valid signatures should have been simple. Checking to make sure the signatures were valid should have been done as a matter of course.

Somebody got sloppy, and it could cost Republicans one of their better House members as well as a seat that should have been safely theirs for another decade.

I never thought his over-whelming hubris would be conquered like this!

Purely subjective, journalism today sucks camel balls.

That's why you are my kinda gal. On that related off-topic, there is no such donation to Paul by Kwiatkowski either. Only 1 to Badnarik's campaign. That is somewhat disappointing; but does have liberty cred to it.

When she says one of their best members, she means one most likely to vote in the middle. He voted for TARP and the auto bailouts, which means he's A-OK in their book.

Michigan Democrats chatter incessantly about nothing. The fact that the GOP even dares to exist is considered confrontational. I'm not a McCotter fan, but "hubris" isn't a word I'd ever use to describe him. I've never met him, but I've been in the same room with him. "Affable" or "methodical" is a much more fitting moniker. Or "centrist."

Mike Rogers - he has "hubris" locked up tight.

BUt if you Googled my name, you wouldn't see anything either. Since DH has been unemployed, we can't afford to come close to maxing out, and we split out donations up to purposely stay under the radar. I can't discredit anybody based on that alone.

ALso, the sad truth is that wearing the Ron Paul label on your sleeve can be used as a tool against you.

I just searched my emails for his name - he ran for the State Senate in 2010, with the enthusiastic support of the local RP groups. Also, Gigi Bowman has him listed on her Liberty Candidates site, which I find credible.

If Rep. McCotter decides not to run after failing to get enough signatures, Kerry will need some major help. Maybe some people can ask Rep. Amash to support Kerry? I think that if Rep. Amash can campaign for Kerry B., a lot of people would get quite excited. An endorsement from Rand and Ron would also be great!

Yeah I would have a hard time believing he could win in a write-in campaign, I can't even imagine that happening.

We should check this guy out more thouroughly, by someone meeting and getting a one on one with him, and asking about his views on monetary policy and ending the fed, which I think tells alot, but I think we could win this seat if he is the only (R) on the ballot. I don't see how we can't win this seat being the only R on the ballot.

Anuzis' newsletter hinted that he expects McCotter to run a write-in. I suppose we can expect that Anuzis will support the write-in over the Republican, in an ironic contradiction to his last newsletter, where he encouraged all of us to work together to elect Republicans.

The Kentucky contingent, Massie and Hightower included, could indeed be very helpful. The guy is going to need money, and unfortunately he's going to be competing for it with the people best equipped to help him out.

Right now the best thing that could happen would be for the Dems to get into an expensive primary battle.

Just curious, on why you speak about the dems so much, with this district... I would think if McCotter tried to run a write-in campaign, while we have Kerry on the ballot as an (R)... we would have good chance of taking this, unless you're thinking enough R's would do the write in and split the vote?

I can't see a (D) winning this seat, but just want to know where you are coming from.

The Dem primary race wish wouls require them to spend money fighting each other while we started stockpiling for the general. (Taj has a pretty big warchest already. I guess as a doctor, he wants to be sure he can legislate his own salary in a couple of different ways.)

As I pointed out earlier, the district leans Dem, even after the redistricting. McCotter draws the independents. I'm not a political strategist at all though. I know someone who is though. I'll drop him an email and see what he thinks might happen if he decided on a write in.

Regarding Taj, from Canton, which I know very well. Canton, you know has alot of engineers from India, that most likely gave to him, but by no means I consider this a threat. Hope nobody takes this the wrong way, I just have alot of knowledge of that peticular area, and I'm sure his friends and family have given generously, but to see him win this district, I would wage is very low on probability.

If McCotter is off the ballot, and we are now looking at the general, then we need to raise money, awareness, and spread the word here for Kelly, the only R on the primary ballot. Count me in!

Is McCotter looking to run as a write in for the primary or or the general? He has one he'll of a first and last name for people to remember how to spell correctly.

Exactly, to win a write-in, is going to require a hell of alot more effort to win than to get our movement behind Kerry. I'm going all in myself, a write-in is laughable, with the grammatical errors possible with a write-in, and I'm sure it would have to be for the general. Most R voters are going to be looking to circle the R name on the ballot. Alot of liberty supporters in this area, and I'm sure a national contingent bringing in thousands of donations would secure us a win here.

Do you know anybody that actually knows the guy? Has he been active in any tea party or even better, RP groups?

I do not, and that is why I asked Angelatc in a post in this thread the same question, I'm merely going by what I've seen on his campaign page and his facebook page, as well as likes, such as Rand Paul and Peter Schiff. I would like to know his view on monetary policy, so I'm hoping since I'm in Florida and Angela is near his district, that she can find out first hand, but since I'm no longer in the meetups and she says they are "buzzing", that's a good indecation.

I am ready to support this myself, but look forward to hearing from the candidate himself on monetary policy, before I actually donate. I like what I see, and also am aware to be careful with this in this forum as well.

I'd like to hear from somebody that vouches that he has put in some legwork for Paul or C4L or very similar in the past. If he has put in verifiable handson work, then I'll donate and see what I can do to help.
