I enjoyed cub scouts. I actually dropped out of boy scouts before finishing partly from perceived moral failings. Sad to see it ended up destroying it.

America’s most iconic youth organizations – the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the USA – have been jolted by unprecedented one-year drops in membership, due partly to the pandemic, and partly to social trends that have been shrinking their ranks for decades.

While both organizations insist they’ll survive, the dramatic declines raise questions about how effectively they’ll be able to carry out their time-honored missions -- teaching skills and teamwork, providing outdoor adventure, encouraging community service.

Membership for the BSA’s flagship Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA programs dropped from 1.97 million in 2019 to 1.12 million in 2020, a 43% plunge, according to figures provided to The Associated Press. Court records show membership has fallen further since then, to about 762,000.

The Girl Scouts say their youth membership fell by nearly 30%, from about 1.4 million in 2019- 2020 to just over 1 million this year.

Both groups, like several other U.S. youth organizations, have experienced declining membership for many years. The Girl Scouts reported youth membership of about 2.8 million in 2003. The BSA had more than 4 million boys participating in the 1970s.

Reasons for the drop include competition from sports leagues, a perception by some families that they are old-fashioned, and busy family schedules. The pandemic brought a particular challenge.

Lions Club, Elks, Moose Lodge, Masons, Kiwanis, VFW, American Legion - they're all in membership decline. My own gut feel is that people are now getting their "sense of connectedness" from internet social media rather than from these civic organizations.

Oh yes, no doubt.

But I think the "kiddie-diddler" scandal combined with "going woke" is what is killing BSA now, and will probably finish them off.

With respect to youth organizations, in particular, I think that one of the things that's going on is that there's a dearth of adults willing to take on adult supervision roles. And I think a lot of that has to do with not wanting to put oneself in a position where you can be falsely accused of inappropriate behavior with minors.

As an Eagle Scout and Vigil Member of the OA, the current trajectory the national BSA has been on since the mid 00's has been vile and disgusting. I have several friends who are fellow Eagle Scouts my age, that will not put their sons in the program. And I know others who have actively removed their sons following this nonsense from the top down.

But this is by design, and the way the left wants it. I do my best not to participate in the culture war, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. And what has happened to the BSA in the last 20 years or so is evidence.

Tens of thousands of people who say they were sexually abused while scouts and filed suit against the Boy Scouts of America have reached an $850 million settlement, the largest in a child sexual abuse case in United States history.

More than 84,000 people are part of the lawsuit against the 110-year-old organization, which has been plagued with claims of abuse from volunteers and leaders since the 1960s. The Boy Scouts of America filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year as it faced mounting legal costs to defend itself against claims of sexual abuse against boys.
