Benton: Holding his nose next two years to support Rand in 16

David Adams, who managed [Rand] Paul’s primary campaign in 2010 before being replaced by Benton, told me that the episode shows just what a bind McConnell finds himself in with the conservative wing as he now faces a viable Tea Party challenge from businessman Matt Bevin.

“I’ve been telling everybody who would sit still the last six months that when that relationship [between McConnell and Benton] blows up, it’ll be funny. It’s even better now that we learn that he’s not fired. It just rolls on and on and on,” said Adams. “Think of it from McConnell’s perspective—if he fires him, who does he hire? He doesn’t hire a Tea Party guy, and that throws the Tea Party out the window. He gives up on the idea that he has this symbiotic relationship with Rand Paul that extends to bringing in his campaign manager.” Instead, McConnell must stick with a man whose feelings about his candidate are now plain to all—even though the hiring of that person did not stave off a Tea Party challenge as hoped. “The purpose of having Jesse was having no primary opponent. Now he has a top-tier one. It’s disastrous any way you look at it.”

There are still nine months until the primary. Pull up your chair, nose plugged or no.

Wait a minute, does this bozo know that McConnell can find out about this statement of his? How does someone as obviously dumb as Benton get such a position to start with?

Yeah that McConnell sure does stink.

And it get even better when Bevin and Grimes go after the corruption in the 2012 campaign and Jesse's role in it.

I guess that is the answer, they are both idiots. Ron Paul is no idiot though, yet he chose him to be his campaign manager. This guy must have more connections than just being married to Ron Paul's granddaughter. To release a picture like this kind of defeats the purpose of McConnell hiring Benton to start with, which was to get a significant percentage of the Tea Party vote.

That's obviously not why Mitch hired Jesse.

people still bashing benton on this thread like even this whole thing pertains to his character, did you miss this quote

In the phone call, Fusaro tells Benton he has evidence that a deputy campaign manager for Ron Paul gave Sorenson a check for $30,000. He asks the former campaign chairman if he knew of the alleged payoff.
“I don’t know anything about that,” says Benton, who asks Fusaro to mail him the evidence. “I’ve got shared responsibility, so if you’ve got proof, I’d like to take action.”

what's your latest claim? that he is outright lying in a one on one private conversation even between himself and his subordinates? you just walk over this statement like it's nothing and continue yapping on how benton and the whole 2012 campaign was corrupt.. can't read? i don't get it

I'm an alien from outer space. I said it so it must be true.

The alleged payoff is being investigated.

Wenzel is an asshole who detests Rand.

it's not even that.. it's the extremely personal way he consciously chooses to go about it.

it's almost like some high school teen drama where one person is repulsively bitching about another's popularity.. disgusting to watch a grown man like wenzel whine and moan

I don't hate anyone as much as I hate Wenzel. I would not be surprised if Wenzel is getting paid for his extremely obsessive personal attacks against Rand.

Why would Jesse even offer that information up in a conversation? The only reason it was offered in this conversation from what I can tell, is he was trying to make himself look good to whom he was talking with because of the previous accusations that he most likely knew about, and was trying to deny.

Listen to how Benton had a long pause after he was directly asked "Were you involved with that?"

Then he goes on to say he is holding his nose? The guy didn't ask him what he thought of Mitch. Jesse just freely started that on his own, probably because he knows the guy he was talking with doesn't like Mitch?

Sure, releasing this isn't exactly smart for Wenzel because now he'll receive the Doug Wead treatment by many (not talking to him about anything), but I'm guessing he has other jobs lined up and people to work with and is being paid to get and release this info.

This dirt is coming from the same source. Former Ron Paul "supporter" Dennis Fusaro from Iowa, was doing "surreptious" recording of Jesse Benton and dumped the info this week. Probably wants to get some praise from neo-cons.

He leaked info damaging to a neocon's campaign manager to score points with the neocons? How does that make any sense? Seeing people around here bend over backwards to make excuses for worms like Benton is truly pathetic.

What I don't get is why Bob Wenzel thinks none of this is going to hurt Ron (I know he doesn't give two shits about Rand). He's been running these crap stories all week bragging about how Maddow and the left media is picking up on it. All it's doing is making Ron Paul supporters look ridiculous.

No, Jesse Benton has made Ron Paul supporters look ridiculous by being a snake. Now he's getting what's coming to him thanks to Wenzel and others. Your understanding of the situation is very confused.

I hope Doug Wead is onboard. =3

I hope Doug Wead has nothing to do with any of this. I hope he's on an island somewhere sipping pina coladas and not trying to think up convoluted strategies like . . . whatever the hell is going on here.

It appears that Wead is intimately involved, things like bribery or the idea of bribery is dangerous especially in politics so moves that like (if it even happened) should be kept to as minimal amount of people as possible. We know Ron would never sanction an act like that, and probably neither would Wead...who knows...

if you're talking to someone you work with on a project, it makes little sense to not let him in on the details, unless people are now suggesting benton is calculating enough to even compartmentalize information like the CIA.. give me a break

you have to use some imagination here.. this is somebody who thinks his conversation is being kept private, and his coworker is discussing with him essentially on the same stuff they were both working on.. the chances of a lie is extremely low unless you're suggesting he pulled off something even richard nixon couldn't by lying to each and every aide according to whom he was talking to.. give me a break this conspiracy shit has to stop with people still speaking like there is no reasonable doubt when it has already surfaced.. it's one thing to speculate on the outset, it's different when there are evidences against your claim beginning to mount.. people used to say ron paul supporters were all trustworthy, but at this rate if i ever get into trouble with the law i wouldn't trust you guys in the jury for a second
