I don't understand why thats illegal?

What I mean is give someone a gift of say $100 and just suggest that they then make a donation to Ron Paul. Its now their money and they can donate it if they want as long as they have not reached their limit.

This has been discussed before. It's illegal, against FEC rules, and people have been charged for doing it.

I just read through the FEC rules on donations. It prohibits solicited donations. So technically you could just loan or give a friend some money and as long as you don't tell him what to do with it, you are breaking no laws.

BTW for both the Tea Party and MLK money bomb, I gave money to a family member and told them to donate it on my behalf as I don't have a credit card. So I guess I am now a criminal

However, I'm a little bit confused by some of the replies to this thread - this is meant to be money donated directly to the campaign, correct? If so, how will the donations be made, and how will they be kept track of? Will the programmers for the project website be able to include a donation mechanism that keeps track of donations but [verifiably!!!] sends them to the campaign - all without violating FEC rules?

Emergence

This is exactly how we should start to think about raising money. Not to get media attention but as fostering collective action among supporters.

I posted before about the concept in Chemistry and Physics called "emergence". The idea is that the properties of a system are not the sum of the individual parts, but rather, they "emerge" from the collective interaction of these parts. Think of how a soap bubble refracts light. Water does not behave this way until it is organized into a sphere, for example, by the surfactants (soap) and the result is a pretty image. With regards to money bombs, they create an intensity and excitement about donating among supporters, both new and old, that garners more money than would be contributed otherwise. The amazing thing is that it is almost impossible to predict these outcomes from the properties of the individual coponents. This is our secret weopon. There is no MSM analyst who can guess what we will do next or how successful it may be. Lets hit them hard. Lets be a super-duper monstrious RP bubble that bounces all over these mofos.

I think this is a great idea but I'm a little confused as well. This seems like it would be very difficult to track.

Each donation has a tracking number. Its simple. We collect names and tracking numbers. Although some people belong to multiple meetup groups, but we can live with this inaccuracy dont you think.

tracking the money

I have 2 programmers working on linking all the Ron Paul meetup groups and a site tracking the donations to the offical campaign coffers! all we are doing is creating a web site that will track the money to see who wins by state meetup group so we can have a contest.

The Ron Paul campaign will plug in our programing and they will send us the data of where the donations are coming from and then the site will tally each donations to the meetup group and state it came from so we can have us a race...

Thats the plan!
