Hi everybody! This is my inaugural post...so I'll try to make it a good one.
I think I've read all the messages, and if this has already be addressed, I apologize.
Has someone done a "reality check" on the legalities of:
1. Raising campaign funds for Ron Paul in various ways (bake sales, rummage sales, etc.) and aggregating them (what McCain-Feingold reporting requirements are there?)
2. Sponsoring a multi-state "game of skill" (i.e. a Meetups contest) ?
I'm just discovering for myself how truly onerous McCain-Feingold is. Is there an elections attorney advising grassroots folks on these issues?
And secondly, I used to work for a marketing company that managed sweepstakes and contests for clients. These kinds of things are heavily regulated in many states, and it's very easy to inadvertently break anti-gambling laws. (And yeah, when your church hosts a Monte Carlo night or your service club raffles off prizes for a fundraiser, it's very possible they're technically breaking the law.)
I know the beauty of the grassroots RP Revolution is the speed with which new ideas can be acted upon. But since I do PR and marketing for a living, I'm always thinking "worst case scenario." I want to be sure that a nationwide effort such as this won't turn into a PR disaster if it's not run 100% according to the letter of the law.
As I said, thanks to people like John McCain, it's very easy to break the law out of ignorance.
