Bob Barr – Right Time, Right Party, Wrong Man

I attended Ron Paul's press conference yesterday expecting Bob Barr to be there. It was going to be as close to an endorsement as Barr could get from Paul. I almost came with a sign that said “Veterans For Barr.” Boy, am I glad I didn't.

Ron Paul had decided to throw some of his now considerable weight behind the electoral issues that marginalize third party candidates and got all four major third party candidates to endorse a four-point platform that included libertarian positions on foreign policy, privacy, the national debt, and the federal reserve.

When I think of the freedom movement, I think of it as broadly as possible. Everyone who thinks the government is too big, too intrusive, too burdensome, and not representing our will abroad with the current interventionist foreign policy is part of the freedom movement. We are a diverse group, and we do not need to be uniform in all of our beliefs to be unified against a government that is out of control. What Ron Paul did was put that down into four points of agreement and got a team united behind them in a very powerful way. It may not have been as dramatic as some people were hoping, but it was beautiful. Our founders would have recognized the importance of what Paul was doing, or as Benjamin Franklin said, “We must all hang together or most assuredly we will all hang separately.”

Bob Barr just had to ruin it for everyone for his own selfish reasons. He had agreed to the platform, and agreed to be at the event, only to withdraw thirty minutes before it happened. There was an empty seat for him on the stage. Paul was gracious and kind, saying things like, “if he can make it,” but behind the scenes he was angry and hurt.

I went to Barr's own press conference right afterwards still giving him the benefit of the doubt. I had hoped that he had a good reason for not being there that I was not aware of. Maybe he would say he had a personal issue. But instead, I sat there and listened to him prattle on about Ross Perot and getting votes and forcing policy issues and “principled leadership.” Then he asked Ron Paul to be his VP.

I was fuming. I had reservations about Barr before publicly endorsing him, but I even offered my support in a letter that was delivered through the LP staff which was ignored by the campaign. I thought his transformation was genuine and that it was a powerful sign for the LP to elect a newcomer, as if to say “we will embrace anyone who comes around to our principles.” Unfortunately, we picked Barr instead. He has since shown himself to not fully comprehend or endorse the philosophy, having praised the troop surge, argued for intervention in Iran and South America, and advocated a national sales tax. He has also run as far from the LP as possible, and there is still no link to the LP on his website. His lack of willingness to work with other people on key issues (issues any true libertarian would be passionate about) is very revealing.

I raised my hand and stood up to speak when Russ Verney acknowledged me. Maybe he realized who I was when I did not claim any press credentials, but he interrupted me and tried to get me to sit down. One of his staffers actually got up and stood next to me, looking like he was ready to carry me out. I guess he realized that was not a good idea. I ignored him and pressed on, despite Verney's continued interruptions. I don't remember exactly what I said, but what I was trying to say went something like this:

“What Ron Paul was doing today was taking leadership on some issues that I know you agree with and your lack of willingness to be a part of a team and work with others on these issues is telling. You have spoken a lot just now about leadership and unity, but it is clear you care about neither, except when you are the leader, and people are united behind you. Good leadership includes good followership and today, you showed your lack of both, and a complete lack of integrity. I am retracting my endorsement.”

The freedom movement is bigger than any one party, and any one leader. The revolution of which I speak is a revolution of values, of political culture, and of the understanding of the responsibility of being a good citizen. When that happens, it will be reflected in our political system one way or another, be it through the Republicans, Democrats, Green Party, Constitution Party, or an independent candidate. As a moderate libertarian, I still believe that the Libertarian Party will be the mechanism by which our movement will come to fruition and I will remain an enthusiastic lifetime member. More than the party or any one candidate, I am committed to this movement, my country, and my principles.

I have signed a petition to have Bob Barr removed from the Libertarian Party ticket. Please click here and sign this petition to join me in this effort. Please forward this to everyone you know who cares about the future of this movement and the Libertarian Party.

The pm I send to those people who didn't bother to donate, but feel its important they know what happened to other people's money... I send them this bit of info about the person who has been sending me threats since sept. 2007:

message starts here:

Well- first, you unintentional became an agent for my enemies. Congrats. Can't blame you, you haven't been under threats and assaults since back in september 2007.
I have already published everything concerning my switch to a local city council race back in May 2008.
Posted it on the front page of my site. Posted the info in every thread where people were asking...
All the money remaining from the exploration has been put into getting all materials has been used for the city council race. The election for that race will happen no later than 2010, but most likely sooner. The guy in my district is 92 and isn't in the best of health. (harry silver)

Now back to the first part of this response. How you are an unwitting tool for my enemies.

During Januray.February.March, and April, I was given daily threats by a member named rodo1776. daily, he would send threats.... and not just threats, this person knew everything about me, knew everything about every local person I know.. and was constantly threatening me with demonization.... well, that is.. until he heard I was running for city council. Then, his tune changed.
Rodo1776 works in Rodney Alexander's office. He uses a proxy out of Costa Rica and thus claims to be an ex-pat when he was questioned about it. (we have the IP)

Rodo1776 already knew what had happened back in april/may. about my decision not file as a federal candidate, but instead, running locally.

so.. who started this thread you want me to respond to?
Rodo1776.
When did he post this comment?

He posted it August 1st.

Wait- He knew in great detail what happened... why would he post something like that.. and of course, disappear after posting it, leaving the people who didn't know any better to fall into the trap?

so- this is about to get really long... but, I am about to show you a series of his PM's he sent me back in April.
I have since cleared my sent messages folder to make room for more messages, so you will only see his messages, but i can add it the gist of what he is responding to...

Rodo1776 writes me on 04-26-2008, 04:21 PM

note- this guy from costa rica (supposedly), but knows details that are very specific to my city and parish.
He knows what our county commisioners are called (police jury), he knows where Rodney is shaking hands at... (this was not published anywhere. only way you would know is if you were close to his campaign)

So I respond by telling Rodo1776 that after returning from the April 15th rally, and after recieving no response or funds from people in my district to a direct mail fundraising drive, which consumed a good chunk of my funds, that I had decided to run for city council.
Thus, I choose not to file as a federal candidate, but instead will file as a city candidate... (note, i didn't tell him who my opponent was... nor my city district location)

So- here is rodo1776 response to this info:

04-26-2008, 05:15 PM

hmm... this threatening agent has now changed his tune, and is in fact supportive of the decision to not run against RODNEY ALEXANDER.
He knows who my opponent is.. what district i am in.. etc..

he then follows up with even more PMs that show he knows way too much about my local situation (remember, he claims to not be from here)

Rodo1776 04-26-2008, 06:02 PM

This guy, who had been sending me threats is now offering to help me write my release for my website, especially if it included me not posting on this forum.

Rodo1776 04-26-2008, 06:06 PM

Rodo1776 then follows-up in May to make sure I am not still planning to run against RODNEY ALEXANDER

rodo1776 05-03-2008, 04:13 PM

and after I reaffirm my committment to the city council race he writes:

rodo1776 05-03-2008, 04:53 PM

rodo1776 then goes silent for months....

one day, he pops up out of no where and creates a thread acting like he doesn't know what I did back in april. though he did.

I choose not to respond to his bullshit thread for good reason. Instead- I answer everyone through PMs unless they are trolls.
My website would still be up if MDH hadn't gone awol and his servers gone down. I have no email either. He just vanished and so did all my online stuff like my website and emails etc. I lost it all.

All my donors know what is going on... and they are the most important people when it comes to the facts, not anonymous people on the internet who didn't bother to help out.

This is where I stand when it comes to participating in threads whose whole design is to try to cause BS.

The only people I OWED explanations to were the people who donated. And all of them were given a chance to get refunds if they didn't agree with my decision.
No refunds were ever requested. In fact, people were even more excited about the local run...
I could have wasted their money on a losing race, or spend it to win a local one. They agreed that the local win would be better than the congressional loss.
When looking to run for the congressional seat, no one locally supported me. No one wanted to volunteer. None of the richer ron paul supporters would donate because they knew I couldn't beat an incumbent without having huge amounts of funding...
but now, all these people are willing to do all those things for my local run... because they know this is a race I can win.

Hope this covers everything...

Brent

I wish you would have posted all of this back then and replied to that thread. It is good to know. I really didn't know what to think of it all, and of course questions arose. I can understand why you wanted to avoid adding to that thread, but this information was not given to us. As far as only owing an explanation to those who donated in the past, trying thinking about those who might donate in the future. Good luck tb.

Too bad I decided to stay home this weekend. I was planning to go to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway ... darn it. McCain is there I see .. I would have worked my way through the grandstands to show him Adam's sign just one more time !!!!

+1776

:p

I met him on Thursday...

Fortunately, I had dinner with him this past Thursday and I have to say he really is the real deal... Super nice, super intelligent and super passionate...

Wouldn't it be great if he went on like a U.S. tour spreading Dr. Paul's and the CFL's message...?

Maybe if there was some type of musicians that toured with him... Aimie Allen maybe?

I was talking with him recently, and he mentioned the need for a new laptop and a video camera for doing his video blogs. It would sure be nice to see the RPF members get behind him and help him out with getting him what he needs. What do you think? Maybe we should start a chipin?

Or more like a world tour .. there are 22 supporting countries on the MeetUp map ya know ... :D I'll be a body guard. LOL Too funny.

HOOOOORAAAAHHHHHHHHH !!!

Adam is a strong man, for sure. It took a lot of guts to do what he did. I commend him for his actions.

But, I must ask - why are we constantly looking for new leaders in this movement? Kokesh, Ventura, Barr, Balwin, etc.. Sure, we can use others' actions as motivation.. But if we are to succeed, we must all become leaders.

my .02c, anyways.

I hate the limelight and I have a slight case of social anxiety disorder. Being a leader was never something that I intended to do, but I can't continue to sit around while bad people run my life. You are right when you say that we must all be leaders. If we don't lead, we will be forced to follow someone of inferior intelligence than ourselves.

Yeah, and their argument is not an argument, it's a tactic. The tactic of very purposeful plants designed to stop true leaders from rising up and leading us towards freedom. John Adams. Imagine where we'd be without him. Jefferson? Washington? If anyone says we don't need leaders, they either have the intellect of a baked potato, or they are plant sent to extinguish anyone that might be championing this cause. Where on earth would we be without Ron Paul?

Do we need leaders? Yes. Good ones. Adam Kokesh has what it takes. He inspires me and gives me courage. He makes me want to make a bigger stand than I would have if he was not here. If you want to be a leader too, then let's see if others follow you, because THAT is the sign of a leader. But stop complaining about others and stop trying to pull them down to your level of apathy. We won't have it.
