A self evident fact: "liberty is not what people yearn for"

The people of the community vote on their taxes, I don't know of anywhere where the taxes are levied helter-skelter with no input from the community at large....?

No, they do not. The trick they do here is to get a new Property Assessor elected, who then reassesses all properties at a higher value. We have been in our house over 30 years. It has happened to us several times. We file appeals, but eventually we will lose.

Then what?

Local governments are going to fund themselves.................How do you envision this happening?
There are many other kinds of taxes, if necessary the local governments could shut down and rely on the county or the state.

Our county collects more in taxes and fees than it needs. The government is so big and so corrupt nobody really knows where to start. We have about a million people in the area, yet we have a 40-member city council. Chattanooga, Knoxville, Memphis, Atlanta, and Charlotte all have councils around 12 members. That’s a start, right there. They used to be part time, but voted themselves full time, with commensurate salary increases.

What solution do you propose?

Would you lock the tax rate to the tax upon purchase? What about refinance? Inheritance?

How would you fight millage rates as they're voted in?

The hazards of living in a city are HUGE and not for one second worth the risk.

No, less government is better, if the local government can't operate on other kinds of taxes then eliminate it.

I'll agree on less government but I'll never agree to one bigger and further from direct confrontation.

State is too far removed, federal is out of the question.

If you can't interrupt those who would govern you in the middle of Sunday dinner then they're too far removed!

If you need an appointment to see them then they're too far removed!

The idea of voluntarily trading local governance for state or federal is the antithesis of both freedom and liberty.

I was just about to point that out- most here don't read sarcasm very well. :seenoevil:

As for freedom- the beginning of the end was the CONstitution- a Hamiltonian coup for big gov- then gov got involved in everything.

Public schools were specifically designed to make everyone compliant factory workers. Freedom is NOT the "American Dream". Horrible 9-5 slavery working for the man.

People live in The Matrix & think it's reality.

It is not.

It is the antithesis of Liberty & what the Declaration originally stood for.

As I have mentioned before Ender I completely understand the concept. And It is the natural anthropological situation of the predator and prey classes within a species as a root. But as a realist I also understand this is never going to change.

I said county or state, I didn't say federal.
I understand that proximity is important to controlling government but it isn't worth letting them steal all property and demand that the supposed owners pay rent or lose access to it.

Politically incorrect (but true) statement of the day: We will never have a free country if women are allowed to vote.

Democrats love to promote the idea that people vote Dem because of racism and sexism but they voted that way when the Dems were far more racist and sexist. The simple truth is women are hardwired to be taken care of. As marriage breaks down, women look to the government to take care of them. Period. I am not saying women and certain ethnic groups shouldn't be allowed to vote. I am saying it is indisputably true that they don't have the same thirst for freedom.

If everyone were allowed to vote at the founding of the United States, this country would have been far less free and successful than it has been. Limiting voting to white male property owners may not be moral but it yielded a better outcome. It isn't a coincidence that Coolidge was the last great president for freedom which also coincided with women getting the ability to vote.

Historically poor people have not owned property.

Why should it be "our" (we) responsibility to provide property ownership or even the opportunity to poor people?

Entitlement is a real thing and I'll have no part of it..

As long as you're paying property tax every year, you don't own your property, PERIOD. Most people deal with it because it's a manageable expense for them if they're successful in life, until they lose their job and realize they're literally paying a teacher's rent, a cop's lifetime medical, etc.

I don't disagree with any of this...

But what's the solution?...

Should property tax be illegal?

Should it be fixed? If so by whom and using what criteria?

Finally under whose authority does any of this take place?

Governments are bloated, every aspect of them including their kourts and their enforcers.... (K is for kangaroo)

The whole thing is one big mess with better than half the mouths eating drawing their food monies from government in one way or another....How does one fight one aspect without engaging the others?

A whole lot more transparency and accountability.

Of course. So the smaller the better.

Not just small.................Accessible is more important.

It's really hard for Jim-Bob or Sally Maye to stick it to you when you know them and their family, where there kids play, the church they go to and they know yours...

Much more removed isn't going to work for many and you can bet the poor will be the first that get shit on...

Not if people only sit around on forums, beg for Big Gov to save them & call people names. who don't agree with them.

(And that was NOT directed to you, personally)

Plenty of people have done much more and things have only gotten worse with every wave of immigration.
