The constitution cannot protect you from government. People like Obama will just claim it non legit. Or they will use it for their own purpose. The "Promote the general welfare" clause can be sickly twisted in anyway. I can claim that I should become dictator of the US on the constitutions authority that I am providing for the general welfare.

Electing "nice" people cant help you either. It has never worked. As the line goes:

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The bottom line is nothing can protect you from the government. You rely on the sheer promise that the government will keep you safe. The funny thing is: the government isn't very good at keeping promises.
