FRANKFORT, Ky. – Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul is reaching out to gun advocates, trying to shore up support from a major voting bloc in Kentucky.

The Bowling Green eye doctor, whose campaign Web site sports footage of him blasting away with an automatic rifle, visited a gun show Saturday in Louisville. It's not an unusual venue for Paul, who attended similar events during the GOP primary race. He's often criticized politicians who weren't "true believers" in the Second Amendment.

Paul faces Democrat Jack Conway in the November general election in Kentucky, where the National Rifle Association routinely gets involved.

The NRA hasn't yet made an endorsement in the Kentucky race. Gun Owners of America endorsed Paul in the primary.

it is really, really awesome that rand has that video shooting the machine gun.... i mean, that's a far cry from the typical hunting rifles/shotguns photo-op

Not sure if Yahoo is trying to be negative here but I like it.

I'm all for Americans being armed. And I imagine that is a popular message in Kentucky.

No way does the NRA endorse gun-grabber Conway. A Paul endorsement is a done-deal. The question is if the NRA will put their money behind it and run ads for Paul.

I can't even find the second amendment or gun rights mentioned on Conway's campaign site's issues section.

Apparently the NRA gave Conway an A grade. However, this is truly a case where if the NRA endorses Conway over Rand Paul, it is the NRA, not Rand Paul who will lose credibility with gun owners.

They've been advertising this gun show in Louisville for several days now on both TV and radio. It's almost the same ad they run every month about "this may be the last time we may have this show if you-know-who takes your rights away," only this time they mentioned that if you attend you can see "special guest Rand Paul." No mention that he was a Senate candidate, but it is clear that the event organizer is a Paul supporter and was in effect giving him free advertising/name recognition.

Did anyone get a chance to attend this? How did Rand do?

Last time the gun show owner was in lexington during the primary he wanted to know if I'd step up to his mic during the saftey breifing to say a few words about Rand to the audiance. I did.

Hes been in the camp for a while now.
