This will likely be my bottom line on the subject.

The fact that Chris Rock didn't fall to the ground/go down to his knees tells me the whole thing was planned from the start. Smith probably didn't even hit him with all of his strength. The whole thing was designed to create shock value in order to get more people to tune in and give them more views they don't deserve.
What bothers me is that this incident has brought out waaaaay too many people commenting around the net about how it's acceptable to assault someone over words that hurt feelings. And not even that hurt the assaulter's feelings. The assaulter's WIFE'S feelings. Will laughed at the joke. Jada did not. I guess we're normalizing assault over words/feelings/disagreement now. Seems about the right trajectory for society these days....
(did seem a bit scripted though since Rock even leaned into the strike, presenting a clear and clean target which no one does when someone is storming at you)
Has Will Smith always been like this, or has something recently drove him over the edge?
If he has always been like this, it could be another case of Hollywood protecting a flawed insider and keeping it a secret for years. If that were the case, we will probably start hearing leaks of past outbursts from Smith.

Bottom line is you can read whatever you want into subtle gestures.
The strut of Will Smith was not indicative of a whisper to follow.Or it could be that Rock was leaning forward attentively because he was expecting Smith to say something to him sotto voce or in a stage whisper, and wasn't anticipating a slap at all.
This. You find what you look for.
If you look for signs or reasons to think that it was staged, you'll find them.
