Why The Nice Words About Paul From Gingrich?

He's saying it because those positions are becoming popular among the grassroots GOP. I heard a local talk show host last night saying that "While Ron Paul has been pushing this the longest, most of the GOP candidates are now supporting the idea of a gold standard". It's called "triangulation". Bill Clinton was great at this. Adopt the popular positions your opponent and differentiate yourself on the unpopular positions. Newt and Mitt are expecting to win over Ron Paul supporters. They are hoping to win over those who might become supporters on the financial issues alone.

Guys... lets keep it positive.. we CAN WIN THIS!!! Out numbers are growing rapidly and DAILY!! We will have crouds so huge at every stop Ron makes and make our presence known at every televised debate/gathering of political nature and have such a HUGE number of votes that WE CAN NO LONGER BE IGNORED OR BELITTLED!!!

Talk to me at the end of febuary!!

Look what is next:

February 4, 2012 Nevada (caucus)

February 4–11, 2012 Maine (caucus)

Don't know where to put this but I absolutely cannot stand Gingrich. Santorum annoys me, Romney is laughably fake but Gingrich just drives me completely off the ledge.

I will never vote for Newt Gingrich. In fact, if Newt Gingrich was running I would vote for Obama under the premise that this vote would do the most harm against Gingrich. I would donate to whatever PAC is running the strongest anti-gingrich ads.

Newt Gingrich is everything that is wrong with our political system in one overweight, ethically pliable package of BS.

Agreed. In fact with some of the things he's done he should probably be in prison.

The whole of the GOP establishment knows that they must have - not would like to have but must have - Ron Paul supporters else they cannot - not may not but cannot - defeat Obama.

You ask why?

He's simply pandering to Paul's supporters. Not that hard to see.

You probably wouldn't need to get out of bed to vote Obama versus Gingrich, as Obama would crush him pretty easily. But I agree with your overall point. I think we can sense more than some that Newt is an authoritarian by instinct (look at his death penalty for smugglers stuff). What few small government credentials he has come basically from hating on people who collect entitlements from the government; actual skepticism about the role of government in people's lives, not so much.

Maybe he wants Paul as an option for VP.

It would be a smart move, he would attract a big chunk of independent voters. But I don't think the GOP organizations/leaders would like accepting Dr. Paul's beliefs as "normal GOP beliefs".

It's a bummer.

As has been reported, Newt has come out lately giving lip-service to the gold standard and praising Ron Paul on his opposition to the FED. At first I thought he was saying nice things about Dr. Paul in an effort to court his supporters. However, is it possible that he'll back Paul in the states where he isn't on ballot, just to prevent Mitt from getting the delegates.

Is it possible that the anti-Mitt wing of the establishment will follow this lead?

Don't read too much into it. It's basic strategy. Since Gingrich and Romney don't consider Santorum or Paul a threat, at this stage in the game they're going to offer some lovely lip service. You'll see Santorum doing a bit of strategy himself in the debates - notice how he's ALWAYS calling out Romney or Gingrich when he speaks? Well it's because when they rebut he then gets to speak AGAIN. It's all strategy.

This video clearly explains the Gingrich thinking process: explaining how Republicans should change to distance themselves from Bush.

"In a fight between the elites and the great mass of people, be on the side of the people." Gingrich explaining Caesar's political party.

both romney and grinch are going hard after each other while playing nice to paul. paul just needs to promote himself in ads, and a three way race at the convention means brokered convention- and after the first vote- no one gets majority, our delegates get unleashed. victory.
if you don't understand the above statement, get involved with your official rp campaign in your state, and if you don't have one- start one yourself and ask me for help.

I saw him looking at the crowd in South Carolina who interrupted the CNN anchor to let Ron Paul speak about abortion.

He wants our votes, but we are not going to give anyone, except Ron Paul, our votes :)
