Why I am voting NO on Amendment #1

What you No-on-1 people fail to realize...

If we increase the homestead exemption and they really NEED the money (as in willing to lose an election over the issue) they will raise the millage rates...

Yes-on-1 will force them to choose to raise taxes (in a time of economic hardship) and lose their seat or reduce government spending (aka no new arena and no 143% increase to 'Culture and Recreation' projects)...

As to a 'better amendment' folks... get real. We (Republicans) control the House, Senate and the Gov. Mansion yet couldn't get Rubio's no property tax on homesteads through!?

So, there is no 'better' amendment out there...

The legislature tried to force rollbacks in local gov't spending but they just overrode the legislature and did not reduce budgets...

No-on-1 folks... get yer head out of your asses!

That is a bunch of B.S.
They did the same thing in Cali and nothing negative came out of it. Stupid money hungry jerks. Cut the Super's salaries and the commisioners.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. I'm just saying why my brother voted that way. They preach fear in those teachers about their jobs, and continue to never cut administration overhead.

Myself, I vote down any tax increase, and vote yes on any tax reduction.

I am sorry, I didn't mean to come out shooting the messenger. It just sucks. Read my first post in this thread and you will know why I am so angry.

I agree, let your local politicians go on record if/when they raise taxes and fees to compensate for this. I will and you better believe I will raise a stink over it!

This amendment will bring out the true colors of our local elected officials. Just be ready to hold them accountable and make sure you tell them this before they make any mistakes.

Sounds like the people voting "no" either don't own homes, or are intimately connected to the property tax rolls via government employment. Be scared. Yes, be vewwwy, vewwwy, skeeered! Muhaha ...

Ergo, the "no" crowd seems to be a relatively lonely bunch of sour grapes here voting to keep outrageous taxes maintaining the over spending and extremely wasteful status quo.

Time to stop WASTING taxpayers money by voting YES!!!

100% agree. This is a compromise solution to the problem, we're not going to get any bigger or more "fair" tax cut coming out of Tallahassee. If you are anti-tax, you should vote YES on #1.

I'm a real estate investor who has been badly hurt the past year due to the bubble, insurance, and high taxes. I voted no. Sorry to ruin your theory.

In any case, you yes people will be happy to know that the meetup folks in my county who are taking exit polls are so far showing yes over no by about 2 to 1. Same for Romney over McCain. Don't ask me about Ron Paul.

Time to hunt for another country I guess (but not before it's really over!)

If this amendment is passed, everyone will be sorry (except for the few special interests who will benefit, like big corporations who's property assessments are very far below the market value, who will benefit by the 10% cap, whereas the homeowner who's property is over assessed, will be subject to more of the same).

This Amendment as far as I can tell only affects homesteaded homeowners. Under Florida law, a corporation cannot be a homesteaded homeowner. So I fail to see how this amendment benefits corporations.

Amendment #1 lowers your taxes if you are a homestead homeowner. Period. If you own rental property (or rent) you are SOL, and while I would prefer a vote to lower millage rates so that everyone can get a tax cut, not just homesteaded homeowners, I think it is unwise to vote "no" on this in hopes you will see that later.

I also own my home. I don't keep rentals. I just flip houses. The people who buy them get stuck, even if they are homesteaders because the assessment changes upon transfer of ownership... that ends the 3% Save our Homes cap right there. So people I try to sell to have the higher tax. Everyone gets royally screwed pretty much except for the folks who locked in their homestead before the bubble.

I voted NO
because it will cause the local government to increase my property taxes AGAIN!!! to make up for the difference they would lose from the exemption.
In the last two years the property appraiser jacked up my house another $100,000 dollars!!!
Then the housing market crashed.
Is the property appraiser out reevaluating our area to LOWER our values back down to where they should be. NO!
You can not vote YES without having any controls on the local government from increasing taxes because they will find a way to make up the difference in the money lost from these state exemptions or tax breaks.(the state controls the public schools budget ...they demanded a 7% increase last year and the schools has to comply which is why our property taxes increased again!)

I am speaking from experience...

It appears Gov Crist is working for the developers to help regain their losses...as he stated he wanted to rejump the housing market.

Agreed.

The wife and I both voted "no" on #1, and "yes" on The Doctor.

(3) Creates a new exemption for the first $25,000 of assessed value for tangible personal property. If you are a landlord, commercial property owner, or business owner, you are required to fill out an appraisal form every January and list all of your personal property (i.e. appliances, furniture, computers, supplies, etc.). For smaller-time owners, the tax is typically $10-100 per year per property/business. This would basically eliminate this tax altogether except for large commercial properties and businesses - ones that own more than $25,000 worth of business related personal property. (This applies to all taxes including school districts.)

(4) Puts a cap of 10% per year on how much the assessed value of a non-homestead property can increase. The cap disappears if the property is sold. The cap expires completely on January 1, 2019. It does not apply to school district taxes. It is something like a Save-Our-Homes Exemption for non-homestead property. For instance if a property is assessed at $100,000, then the assessment in the next year will not increase to more than $110,000, then $121,000 in the following year. (Currently non-homestead properties can increase to 150K or 200K or more in one year).

I guess my eyes glazed over when I read about this... but even re-reading this now, how is any of this bad? (3) reads like a tax cut for small businesses and (4) creates a save-our-homes type property tax increase cap on non-homesteads.

Well the scare tatic worked for your brothers wife. If she was smart and read the propsoal on her own instead of listening to the media, she would have known that this proposal DOES NOT TOUCH SCHOOLS.

My brother lives in Florida and is voting no on it. But his wife is a teacher, and they have basically told the teachers they are going to cut 1500 jobs if it passed. So teachers (and their families) are just voting NO for it to save their jobs.

I voted yes, this is exactly the kinda of thing RP would have supported as well...

We are not in need of a OVER HAUL in florida... this is PURELY a state issue. So the only tax you need to look at is, Property Tax.

All they want to do is give you another 25k deduction, and allow you to transfer yoru homestead status...

WHAT is bad about that?
It's less taxes, and Forces people to spend wisely.

If you truely believe in RP's message, this is a sure fire Yes vote.

Having lived in Florida (California now) I can safely say that Floridians have never met a constitutional amendment they haven't liked.

Our exit poll, taken by 6 meetup members in as many precincts show 71.5% Yes and 28.5% No.

That's my mid day report. We are going out for the late afternoon/early evening voters shortly.

Ok, if you must know, we are showing Ron Paul at 5.35%. Disappointing for what is supposed to be a conservative area. However, we have a lot of seniors and they have been coming out in droves. Overall, Romney is dominating around here. Of course he raised like 90,000 from our county and has more signs than God (a lot more). He has visited here once or twice (Dr. Paul never came by, but we understand why). He's beating McCain here, but McCain will probably make up for it down south.

I'm going to get me a bumper sticker that says "Don't blame me when the SS check stops coming... I VOTED RON PAUL!".

The other bumper sticker I need to get will merely say, "Kiss my ass you entitlement addicted morons!".

Yeah, I'm frustrated.. can you tell?

BUMP!

Thank you Floridians for finally doing something right at the polls and overwhelmingly VOTING YES on Amendment 1!!!!
