Why does Ron hate the Dept. of Education so much?

Ron needs to follow up the "why" he wants to do away with the Department of Education. I'm not sure Republicans ever explained it that great to start with and to expect voters to remember the argument from 20 years ago is now wise.

Do away with it so the states and local communities can educate their children and not pass the $$ through a huge Fed bureacracy. Pretty simple but you can't ignore the explanation!!

problem is he has NEVER explained why and it TURNS viewers off.

Not once in a debate has he said that he wants teachers and parents to make decisions locally on what their children should be getting in the way of education.

I agree. He needs to make that statement plain for the average sheeple to digest........z

I don't think Dr. Paul expects to win the "Stupid people" vote. He does appeal to educated voters, and open minds. Those that will research the positions.

Since many voting Americans are stupid, I guess that means he doesn't "expect" to win the election either.

I agree with the original poster in that sometimes I wish he would go one extra step and explain WHY (on a lot of his positions) . It would only take an additional sentence and would help those, not so enlightened as yourself, understand him better.

I remember when I first heard Dr. Paul talk about wanting to eliminate the Department of Education, my response was "ba-roo?!"

Even though eliminating a lot of the bureaucracy and useless spending is a good thing, there might be a concern on the state level. If a state is not as wealthy, is there a chance that people who live in other, wealthier states will have the edge over the poorer state?

I remember when I was in elementary school and we talked about the first gulf war and the somalia interventions in class. We had articles from newsweek and newspapers and such to go on, and a teacher telling us about it. Not even once was the legitimacy of the war itself or whether or not America should be getting involved in the first place ever talked about. The concept of intervention? Never brought up, it's just assumed that if someone thinks someone else is doing something wrong or bad, America rushes in to the rescue. I bet kids for years have been being taught the exact same thing about Iraq and Afghanistan.

When my oldest son was in junior high, he came crashing through the door one afternoon demanding a copy of the Constitution. We lived across the street from the school. The social studies teacher told the class that the President had the power to declare war. My son argued with her and wouldn't give up. The other students were sure she was right because it was in some movie. Independence Day, I think. He insisted they find a copy of the Constitution, but no one in the school could find one. No one. So he came home to get one.

Crazy.

It's evil! Education is none of the federal government's business at all. Only states and local governments should be involved. In addition when the federal government gets involved the bureaucracy gets so huge that it just wastes tons and tons of money for no reason.

The real reason for the department of education is to brainwash kids that the federal government needs to be involved in your life for everything and to ensure that people stay ignorant about important subjects that they don't want you to know about so they can get away with anything they want.

Every teacher I know hates the DOE.

same here. every single one of my teachers wants to get rid of it.
even most students do.
mainly because students HATE standardized testing
and some are coming to realize that we could have a much better education

oh and parents with kids in schools hate it too

Because it UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

It is also a form of conditioning. The DoE sets the bar low, and has thus dumbed down our society.

I have heard him talk about this in interviews and speeches. Like the other candidates, Ron Paul gives a lot of 'Readers Digest' versions of his answers in the debates. He's telling the truth and he's appealing to those who favored abolishing the DOE during Reagan's time, but that doesn't seem to matter much to a great number of Republican voters.

The problem with a lot of conservatives is that they tend to support existing institutions. If something's been around a while, the idea of getting rid of it seems kinda nutty to them.

I don't oppose eliminating the department of education but I am curious as to why Ron opposes this federal agency more than so many others. He always brings it up in speeches and debates. He obviously wants to terminate most federal bureaucracies but the fact that he names the Dept. of Education by name every time makes me curious. What are the biggest problems with it? The only thing that comes to my mind is that it produces centralized education from the federal government which is responsible for dumbing down students.

As an educator, I, like Ron Paul, am against the department of education. Ron Paul is about personal liberty and limited government intervention. Having worked in a Title 1 (Federally subsidsized) school for 17 years, I am an advocate for decisions being made on the smaller organizational level. As more levels of government become involved in "improving" education all that occurs is more paperwork and hoop jumping for educators. Threatening to take away my funding if my students don't pass the state test (in compliance with No Child Left Behind) does not improve my teaching. What improves my teaching is my professionalism, my relationships with my students, my personal integrity and time to plan for individual students. The amount of time teachers spend on jumping through the Department of Education hoops takes away from looking at individual students and determining how best to help each student succeed-the exact opposite of what No Child Left Behind and the Department of Education says it promotes.

He needs a chart to explain this topic to people, most people hear this and they don't have a clue what he's talking about...

I've been complaining about this since my first day in the revolution. 90% of casual viewers think "OMG, HE HATES CHILDREN!! HEARTLESS BASTARD!!"

My only explanation is Ron Paul refuses to pander to the "dumbass vote". Unfortunately, that's most of America :(

Take a look at any textbook that the children have these days. Be careful: your jaw will hit the floor so hard, it will shatter

I agree. I'm not a Republican. I'm an independent that found truth in Ron Paul's message. I registered Rep in California just to vote for him but I don't know all of the history of the Republican party. I understand the foreign policy, monetary, and fiscal issues but I'm sure there are other people like me that didn't understand that he was appealing to the old conservative Republican base when he mentions the Dept of Education.
