The problem with NH is the close proximity of mind-numbing numbers of clueless people totally dependent on an economic system destined to collapse.
People tend to be more rural in NH and ME and VT than most of the country. Lots of people garden, have orchards, have chickens, cut their own wood, sell wood to others, fish, hunt, have seasonal jobs in additional to their regular job up here and so on. What makes your statement more true of a place like NH than a place like NJ, NC or CA (other places mentioned on this thread?)
Do you think legions of poor people in Boston will steal cars (they tend not to have cars) and drive up to NH to commit crime? They are far better committing crime where they live in Boston where most people are unarmed than stealing cars and driving to NH. NH has arguably the least restrictive weapons law in the industrialized world. It is perfectly legal for people on any age (even 1) to carry firearms in bars in NH. We have a gun culture in NH (as do ME and VT) that people in Boston are well aware of. They are far more likely to go to RI or CT to steal as it is far safer for the criminals.
Northern New England has by far the lowest crime of any region in the US. Crime tends to be concentrated in the Southeast, Southwest and in and around major cities on the West Coast, East Coast and Midwest.
Honestly, though, I'm not sure of this economic collapse you are speaking of. There was a big economic collapse in the 90s and it hurt NH a lot. NH was heavily dependent on non-smart manufacturing and the mills. Much of that went away but NH bounced back. Lots of tech manufacturing and tech jobs in general moved into NH. NH was one of the least harmed states by the 2008 collapse. NH was certainly hurt more in the 2008 collapse than the heavy federal welfare states of ND, SD, IA and NE, but it faired much better than most states. Keep in mind that NH actually is one of the top losers to the federal government when it comes to taxes out/projects in. The people of NH are more financially independent of federal money than the people of almost every other state.
