What internet browser and Antivirus to use?

If you want to give a chance to Chrome (its very quick) you might want to try Chromium, that is the open source original browser. Chrome is just the google adapted version. Chromium is the same but without the google stuff.

It's just my opinion, but if it means anything to you I have 4 computer certifications (A+, Network+, Server+, and Toshiba Certified Repair Tech). None of those compare to my hours of experience fixing and/or defending all types of malware (luckily I don't do it as a job anymore).

Anyway, I'll just address the AV part and recommend these:

Top choice: Avira Antivir
Runner ups: Avast or Kaspersky

Firefox - Avast (free)

By the way, if your Firefox is crashing the first thing to do is to check all of your add-ons, disable, disable, disable.

Edit: Sure would be nice to have a Computer sub-forum around here.

NOD32 or F-Secure.

Firefox is good but has miserable memory management while Chrome is better in that department,

Microsoft Certified for the last 8 years. When I took the A+ cert it was still DOS and windows 3.11.

I use Firefox and Safari without anti virus. I also use Mac OS X 10.6.

Avast is free and works pretty well.

Also, on a side note - Startpage.com is a great search engine if you're concerned with privacy. They let you open links with a proxy:)

I got an email recently from Comptia. New certifications will need to be renewed. Apparently they'd like more money.

I read that as well. I am not really in a line of work that uses an A+ skill set anymore. Plus I find the "My A+ test was for DOS and Windows 3.11" has more caché than a current cert would anyhow.
