Let's assume McCain has a heart attack, will be killed by Terrorists or simply get's hit by a thunderbolt tomorrow. Since Dr. Paul is the only republican candidate who's still in the race besides McCain, would that automatically makes him the parties nominee - or may others enter the presdential race at this point as well?

Unless I missed something (which is entirely possible) Romney only suspended his campaign, so it may be brought back to life and he'll take McCains place.

Other opinions?

AFAIK it wouldn't make a difference regarding Ron Paul. Someone explained that in some other thread with similar questions concerning McCain.

They'll put him on ice and roll him out during the convention. 90% of the public won't know the difference and will vote for him in the general election.

Remember 2000:

A candidate for the US Senate, who was killed in a plane crash in October, has been elected after his name remained on the ballot.

Mel Carnahan, a Democrat and former governor of Missouri State in the Mid-West, died too late for his name to be removed from the ballot.

Under state election rules he is likely to be replaced by his widow, Jean, after the narrow victory over his Republican rival by about 1% of the vote.

The plane crash that killed the governor, his son and an aide last month turned what was already a bitterly fought contest against Republican Senator John Ashcroft, into a bizarre contest.

My bet is that McCain's delegates will be free and the nominee would end up being determined at the convention.

It would be a total crap shoot at the convention as to who is the nominee.

Romney is only suspended and has more delegates, he would take McDicks place.

No, there aren't enough pledged delegates left, and most of his delegates are no longer pledged to him. Romney will only be on one more state's ballot from now on, as well, and that is West Virginia, where 9 delegates are at stake.

you know I'm hardly a McCain supporter but wishing him dead is not good in either moral or public relations sense.

Oh, we all know you have thought about it too. Every Republican who is opposed to McCain's nomination has thought of it. If you say you haven't, you are lying. That being said, I do not wish it, but I will not mourn.

No, in all honesty, I never thought about it. you know why? Let's just say the beast has many heads, if you know what I mean.

Ok, Let not be so mean....

What if McPain went into a life long "painless" coma?
Better that then another 4-8 years of war.
