What Happened Trump's "Smart People"?

Mitt's campaign tried to get the rule into the 2012 RNC where campaigns could disavow delegates they don't like. This is because (among many other embarrassments) Ron 2012 took most of Mitt's home state delegation, where even the Lt. Governor was beaten by an 18 year old kid. This rule did not pass, because it was opposed strongly by grassroots activists.

Yeah I like that rule.

That does not change the fact that the way Colorado was done is crap and it would have been better as a primary.

Except that's not a fact. It's an opinion. And the only reason anybody has that opinion is because their guy lost, and they're looking for someone else to blame.

They canceled the straw poll because of Ron 2012; the RNC new rules said straw polls (if a state has one) must be bound proportionally. The current and former GOP chair both favor going to a primary system, which they probably will next cycle, but didn't have enough time to do it this time.

Iowa faced the same situation but kept their straw poll.

Colorado used to have a preference poll (just like Iowa does) but they canceled it this year. Ironically, they probably did so because they were worried somebody like Cruz might win that preference poll and embarrass the front runner (which they assumed would be Jeb or Marco). The elites never imagined a scenario in which Trump would be the front runner and they would actually have wanted Cruz to get that high profile validation from the voters of the state. Trump never had much of a shot in Colorado either way, but because of the GOP shenanigans he's been able to blame his defeat on crooked party insiders rather than just not being particularly strong among Mountain West voters.

That preference poll was at the caucuses, which themselves weren't cancelled. They just no longer included that preference poll.

Imagine what would have happened if the 2012 rules were in effect and Trump had won the preference poll, and then Cruz had still gone on to win all the delegates to the national convention. Do you really think Trump and his cronies would be complaining less in that case than they are now?

So you prefer caucuses. Good for you.

When most of the primaries have state conventions then it matters. The delegates are not scorecards, they are people. Sean Hannity said that Ted Cruz can finish dead last and still take more than half the delegates. Donald Trumps new campaign manager still says it is rigged instead of encouraging his supporters to show up at the conventions.
