What do Spanish people see in McCain?

+1 I'm hispanic and I don't like illegal immigration... and of course I'm voting for Ron Paul

Yeah...people are making too much ado about the exit poll results for Hispanics. Ron Paul did the same there, minus Cubans.

LOL, I married a Native American and in school the kids all called my kids nasty names.
I won't even repeat the names those kids called mine. I guess it is about what people think somebody looks like rather than what the person actually is.

Thats terrible grrrr

Spanish people? No!

Castro?

Fox News exits have McCain up with seniors and Hispanics

Via Halperin:

Senior Citizens– McCain 40, Romney 31, Giuliani 18, Huckabee 7
Veterans– McCain 37, Romney 36, Giuliani 14, Huckabee 8
Hispanics– McCain 50, Giuliani 26, Romney 16, Huckabee 5

A(n) Hispanic is a US citizen or resident with a Spanish-language heritage. The label says nothing about race or ethnicity. It is a political label.

But to get to your question.

Most Hispanics (not Spanish people) in Florida are of Cuban heritage and are anti-Castro, right wing and Republican. Cuban immigrants are mostly legal because the law itself is very lenient with respect to Cuban immigration but Cubans are sympathetic toward the plight of non-Cuban Hispanics who are here illegally. McCain fits the bill.

The political reason is easy to explain. The statewide Hispanic political leadership in Florida (two US Representatives, one US Senator) is Cuban-American but this leadership counts on support from other Hispanics.

I'm a brown American!

Most Hispanics (not Spanish people)

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't really like labels all that well, but come on, at least Hispanic implies that you're AMERICAN. To call us Spanish, implies that we hold some sort of national connection to Spain. That's like calling black people Africans!

But as someone who is a Mexican-American and lives in a border town (El Paso, TX), some of my original hesitance to support Ron Paul (I used to be a Clinton supporter... I know, I know! Please don't stone me! Forgiveness!) was that he was so anti-illegal immigration. The main reason being that he voted for that border fence which I think is a RIDICULOUS idea to help prevent further illegal immigration, but then I heard him say that the only reason he voted for it, was because the bill included a [oh, fuck no Jon Stewart!! He just said that it'd be a good 'tonic' for America to have an Obama and a McCain election! AHHHHH!!!!] provision to say NO to amnesty. That I can accept. I like practical positions and the smart men behind them. So immigration was somewhat of an issue for me. But then again, I used to be a Democrat who got his news from the TV. :o

Well, you sure have the language down pat..that post was so funny..I enjoyed your story..
(we can't call you a spanish-american because we had a war named that).

Please, it's Hispanic or Hispanics not "Spanish"

I'm Cuban, I have no clue why anyone will vote for McCain (including U.S citizens).

I am in shame Dr Paul did not perform well among Cubans, but all I can do is keep donating, canvasing and talking to everyone I know about Dr Paul.

I'm sad to inform you that not all Cubans come here for political reasons, most will take a long time to learn the language and others simply don't care. (Most U.S citizens don't care either).

I seriously hope Dr Paul win this election, he represents what the founding fathers envisioned for this country, it will benefits us all equally. All the other candidates represent a defined group on this country, only freedom is equal for all.

But anyway, what do i know?
