What do I need for the depression.

LOL! Pretty good idea, excepting the fact we are all on that government list that will put us in the concentration camps for merely posting at this forum, no?:p

LOL.. least we know we have our reservations set. <compares itinerary> which color list did you get on? :p

At least one gun. This should be the FIRST thing you get, otherwise, all that food you gathered will be taken by someone, or group, desperate to eat. And you have to assume they will kill you to get it.

A couple of asprin and several cases of whiskey. The asprins are for you. The whiskey is for trade later on when things get worse.

Seriously, cut your debt and reduce your expenses. Put aside enough money to pay your bills for as much as a year if you can (normally they suggest 6-8 months but if you should lose a job these days you could be unemployed longer). Work every day as if your job depends on it. It could. None of this will guarantee you will not be hit, but is will make trying to get through it easier.

The place on the DOW Jones Industrial with the little flag is where we ran up the stock market and the drop following it is the Great Depression.

I suppose a lot of the rise is because the dollar has been losing it value and it takes a bunch to buy the same amount of stock.

Who knows what we are heading for but some of the signs don't look very good.

I think a good pair of shoes and starting out with pockets with no holes might be nice.

P.S. Wasn't it around 1980 when we went off of the gold standard and the Federal Reserve and the banks started lending without any thing behind the currency? It is a shame they are about to stiff us with putting up some money to keep these crooks and their businesses propped up a little longer.

P.S.P.S I looked it up. This link says 1973.

Your chart is too small to see what happened then. Here is another perspective:

The US formally and finally abandoned the gold standard in 1971 when Richard Nixon said that the US would stop allowing foreign governments to exchange US currency for gold from the government. Gold backed money was no longer printed after 1963 and by 1968 even circulating gold and silver certificates were no longer to be convertable to gold or silver. The US was off and on a gold standard quite a few times before that. It was usually deemed necessary to abandon the gold standard during a financial crisis to be able to respond to them- like recessions, depressions, and wars.

Nice detail in that graph!

I would like to see our money tied to something. I'm thinking it could be tied to many things all at the same time, not just gold and silver.

We need to find a way to stop people, banks, and governments from spending and loaning money that they don't have any way to back.

The government is ripping us off to back the money the banks loaned without having any assets to cover it. I just can't believe it. Plus I can't afford it. I wonder when that will sink in with them?

just ordered a bunch of stuff from beprepared.com. Good prices on dehydrated foods, some around 600 cal/$1. Im going to get some freeze dried too, but these are way more expensive. When SHTF the freeze dried will be like 'eating out' lol

I have plans on learning gun basics soon as there is a nice range about 5 min from my work

slowly, but hopefully fast enough ill be ready

To my mind, this depression is going to be significantly more violent than the last one. People are far more materialistic, the family is broken, and we live in an instant-gratification society. Arm yourself and focus on essentials.

Agreed. It's going to be really bad when people have nothing left to lose..

What do I need for the depression.

Prozac. :)

Seriously, you need to be fit and not take shit from anyone. You need a gun and the ability to use it with accuracy and the courage to use it without hesitation, your life may depend on it. You need to be willing to steal from the rich in order to survive. If you lack these abilities you probalby won't make it unless you are already rich and have a small army protecting you.

They will go after easy targets. If you are an easy target and have resources you will eventually be hit by people desperate to survive. The rich will also be hit and hit hard. No one will get a free ride during the next depression. It will be hell on Earth.

Also, distance matters. If possible, you should be a few days walking distance from major cities.

A few days walkign distance would be about... 80 miles? Maybe 60?

I don't think you need to be that far away unless you think this depression will result in nuclear war, in which case the fallout will probably kill us all anyway...

Speaking of Nuclear War, it would be a good idea to brush up on Nuclear Survival. If you have a basement/makeshift fallout shelter and aren't near the epicenter of a strike, and have taken basic preparations, your chances of survival are higher than you would imagine.

Why is everyone assuming that there will be a lack of food?

It's not like farms and fields are just going to vaporize...

Heh, I was thinking two or three hours driving distance, but that's WAY more than the average person can walk in a few days.

And I was thinking of robbery, other crimes. My anti-gun supervisor lives in the city and gets robbed every couple months.

So it's not final yet, but all signs point to going down and fast instead of gradual. What do you recommend when preparing for a depression. I know there is only so much you can prepare for, but what are the basics

alcohol may be in order?

Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight.
