Reporter/blogger Dave Weigel has resigned from the Washington Post following the leak of controversial, off-the-record emails he sent to a group of journalists.

Weigel, who covered the conservative beat for the Washington Post, said in an e-mail to the liberal JournoList group that "this would be a vastly better world to live in if Matt Drudge decided to handle his emotional problems more responsibly, and set himself on fire."

Weigel apologized to his readers (and to Drudge), but now FishbowlDC has confirmed that Weigel resigned from the newspaper Friday morning.

I can't wait to see who they pick as their next "conservative" columnist. Hey, David Frum desperately needs a gig.

Great, probably to be replaced by a neoconservative-leaning blogger "to cover the right."

At least they're no longer pretending he is some sort of libertarian, or even a conservative.

The current flap over Washington Post blogger Dave Weigel has its roots in a fact that suprised me when I learned of it earlier this year: The Post appears to have hired Weigel, a liberal blogger, under the false impression that he's a conservative. The new controversy over the revelation that he's liberal is primarily the Post's fault, not his, except to the degree that he allowed the paper's brass to put him in an unsustainable position.

I think the guy is a tool, but he's no worse than any of the other tools in media. Mind you, if they are ALL going to resign, that would be a blessing (starting with the local KY fishwrap paper), but Weigel was really no tool-ier than the rest.... I resented him for his obvious bias against the Pauls while pretending to support their ideas when popular, but he really wasn't worse than some of the truly statist idiots.

But I'd love them to put in Jack Hunter. WILL NOT happen. We'll probably get some Huff Po type. Tucker Carlson might work for them, if they can pry him from the Daily Caller -- assuming Weigel was supposed to appeal to libertarians, and I do assume that, actually. I did think he was an odd choice, at the time.

If they are going to go progressive I hope they go all the way and put in someone like Jane H from firedoglake. At least she is intellectually honest.

Here is another write up of it with a poll on whether he should have gone: http://www.taylormarsh.com/

I'm thinking of voting 'I don't care' just on freedom of speech grounds. Do we need even MORE pc at the press level?

I mean, we were having plenty of fun laughing at his private emails, but they were private emails.

The WashPost fired Dan Froomkin and Dave Weigel, while hiring torture advocate/low-level propagandist Marc Theissen

I think this is terrible. I didn't read his columns regularly, but he always seemed fair to Ron Paul at Right Now.

No, he isn't fair. He drops in 'too bad about those racist newsletters' every chance he gets even when the topic is completely foreign to it, and he KNOWS they are nonsense.

However, this neocon is worse and the reason he is available is because that wing of conservatism is losing popularity (thank heaven.) Trust the conservative-ignorant Washington Post to give him a platform.
