Want to name my newborn baby girl 'Liberty'

I like it !! The name will always be a conversation opener " I love your name", "special name for a special girl".

Just became a father of a healthy & beautiful baby girl, whom I would like to give a name “Liberty”. What do you guys think of that name for a living person? Do you like it or do you think it's odd and/or possibly troubling?

Little background:

I’m European guy, married to a Chinese. We met and dated while studying in US, which is one part of the reason it makes sense for us to give our daughter an American name. But now we live in Hong Kong, so it would be a bit more unusual than in the states. If we do decide to give our daughter a middle name, it would probably be a Chinese one. All Chinese people here usually have American middle names for easier introduction/pronunciation purposes (I call it their Hollywood names).

My personal desire to give our daughter the name Liberty or perhaps some other libertarian name is quite strong. Ever since the Ron Paul Revolution changed the course of my life in 2007, I've cared about nothing more than learning about and promoting the ideas of individual freedom. My newly acquired taste of freedom during my studies in the US and now here in Hong Kong today (the worlds’ freest economy) is a solid and constant reminder of how important freedom really is for one’s well being. Well, enough of my blabbering…

Thanks in advance for any of your thoughts.

Firstly, congratulations and may you remain off the front page after her first date, some years from now.

"Liberty"... dunno... the diminutive would be "Libby" and I could never quite get comfy with that name... like "Chloe". But I'm not her daddy, so my opinion means nothing, really.

That all said, may she live a long, happy, and very healthy life... all in her namesake.

ETA: How about Freida (from the German "Freiheit" - "Liberty")?

Better yet, Eleutheria or Leuteria from the Greek for "liberty" or "freedom"?

People, especially girls, are self-conscious. Liberty is not a person's name. Flash-forward to when she is a teenager, this could cause problems with the boys. And long-term, she will always get a weird look or question whenever she says her name.

Oddly, I've known several women named "Liberty" over the past 20 years or so. All of them were very happy ladies, and for some reason most of them were Asian. Not sure what that means lol

There are problems with every name if you look closely enough. If one more person calls me "Missy" or tries to sing "Sweet Melissa" at me....

You're posting in a forum under someone named Rand (Randy!) and someone else named Ronald (you know, like the clown).

There's Donald (like the duck) and Ben-Gay Carson. There's Ted Cruz-Missile and Marco-Polo Rubio. There's Krispy Kreme Christie, and Hitlery Clinton and It-Berns-When-I-Pee Colonel Sanders. There's iCarly and Dick Santorum and Lindsay Graham. Seriously. You can find something to tack on to just about anyone's name.

I think Liberty is a pretty name, and does not have to slap her with the burden of being a political statement. Lady Liberty is a fine name and makes an adorable Halloween costume.

Go with your gut. Give her a middle name she can use if she absolutely doesn't like it. I like Liberty Belle. My son got stuck with a Czech last name so I gave him a middle name that couldve been used as a last name if need be. Ironically he grew up to be a performer and uses my maiden name.

There is a certain Sheriff from Arizona, who was one of the guys who took the Brady Bill to the S.C. and won, and also authored a few books about Liberty, who has a grand daughter named Liberty Bell...
