The American retail giant is to introduce 360 robot janitors by the end of January. They are said to have the ability to engage in autonomous cleaning even when customers are around.

The operating software of these robots is called "BrainOS" and it has been designed by the San Diego-based start-up "Brain Corp."

Bloomberg Technology said:
"The world’s largest retailer is rolling out 360 autonomous floor-scrubbing robots in some of its stores in the U.S. by the end of the January, it said in a joint statement with Brain Corp., which makes the machines. The autonomous janitors can clean floors on their own even when customers are around, according to the San Diego-based startup.

Walmart has already been experimenting with automating the scanning of shelves for out-of-stock items and hauling products from storage for online orders. Advances in computer vision are also making it possible to use retail floor data to better understand consumer behavior, improve inventory tracking and even do away with checkout counters, as Amazon.com Inc. is trying to do with its cashierless stores. Brain’s robots are equipped with an array of sensors that let them to gather and upload data."

understand consumer behavior

Next up: robots accused of racism because they follow black customers...will the robots talk?

Of course, how could they miss them.

Lawsuits through the roof. Customers claiming to be tripped by robot janitors will become all the rage.

If they are smart enough to move out of the way when a customer comes through, they're miles ahead of the humans that currently work at Wal-Mart.

An Amazon robot tore open a can of bear repellant at the company's New Jersey warehouse on Wednesday, hospitalizing 24 workers. One employee is in critical condition, according to ABC News, while 30 others were treated on the scene. The 1.3-million-square-foot Amazon fulfilment center in the town of Robbinsville, New Jersey, employs more than 3,000 people.

A preliminary investigation determined that the bear repellant, which is like pepper spray for aggressive or charging bears, fell off a shelf. But a spokesperson for Robbinsville Township further clarified that an automated machine punctured the 9-ounce can, releasing its toxic fumes. Amazon sells different types of bear repellant on its online shopping site.
