VW new car 258 MPG for under $1000

Top speed of sixty or so and wears a motorcycle tag. The zero to sixty time is probably in the neighborhood of an hour...

Is that american or imperial gallons? If it is the latter, then it is more like 200mpg. Even so, it's an amazing deal, and you can't beat that price ($600 is MUCH less than a thousand).

I'd get one to commute. Right now. I would whip out my checkbook and buy it.

Whoaaa buddy... It said "cruising speed" of sixty to calculate mpg, not "top speed" of sixty.. (EDIT: According to second article top speed is ~ 60mph.. oops)

How do you know what the 0-60 is?

You're right, it did say cruising speed. I was going by my misread that this was the top speed and factoring in the mileage and the fact that the cyclecar/microcar market in Europe has put up with nonexistent acceleration for decades and decades.

One reason I dislike being in a smaller car:

Can you imagine this accident in one of those small cars?

The future of cars is composite fibers. They are much lighter than steel and MUCH stronger, also more expensive.

This is the direction we need to take cars. They don't need to be tiny like this one, but they do need to be light because right now we are just hauling around a bunch of steel for no apparent reason. If both of the above cars were built with composite fibers, the guy on the bottom probably wouldn't be in too bad of shape.

I'm fairly certain I wouldn't fit in it... Have to tilt my head to the side and slouch for many normal cars, already.

Hmm, actually I read the first article and not the second... the second article DOES say top speed of around 60pmh..so you were right.

No.

"...in a form that meets federal crash safety and emissions requirements..."

A 1963 Plymouth wagon with a third seat seats nine and weighs less than two tons. Can you find a minivan that seats seven and weighs less than two tons? Airbags (which occasionally attack the people they're supposed to protect), side door guard beams (which are heavy enough to make thick doors with 'crumple zones' impossible), energy absorbing bumpers (which protect only the car from slow speed collisions and don't protect you at all) and other "safety" equipment mandated by the federal government beginning in the seventies make it illegal to build and sell a 1963 Plymouth wagon today...

This car could conceivably come to the U.S.--and without a drop in mileage--but only because it has three wheels. Thus, it's legally a motorcycle, not a car, and escapes all this crap.

Hmmm, good point. With all those regulations, it doesn't look like anybody's going to have a chance to win the XPrize. Thanks Uncle Sam!

I'm with Kludge. At 6'8" and 320 pounds, I doubt I would fit. And my poor wife would have to be on top of me, or at least leaning over me.... wait a sec... I'll take one!

Let me know when they have something that can haul a ton and survive my driveway year round.
Till then it is a novelty item. :p

For you tall people, I bet you could take out the front seat and sit in the back one (it is a two seater). Also the top speed is 123km/hour, which is 76.26 miles per hour. Of course, it doesn't say how much weight it is carrying to get to that speed. A small guy could get a moped to go that fast, but carrying a big guy like me, it would top out at 40-45mph.

I would buy one just to go to the store and intown driving. Just think how easy parallel parking would be! lol

Captain Mainwaring Says:
March 6th, 2009 at 6:04 pm Sorry guys but you’ve been taken in here.
This thing got a bit of publicity about 4 years ago when the megalomaniac Piech drove it from some corner of Germany to a motor show somewhere as a demonstration of what VW could do if all practical considerations were cast aside.
It’s a PR stunt, a joke, and I’m surprised that it has resurfaced.

hmmmm....
