Visa Caves, Will Recategorize Gun Purchases so Democrats Can Flag Them

Visa caved to the demands of New York Democrats and gun control groups and will recategorize gun purchases in a way that allows them to be flagged.

On August 28, 2022, Breitbart News noted Gabby Giffords’ gun control group, Giffords, was urging major credit companies to flag gun and ammo purchases via a new sales categorization.

Giffords posted a tweet which said, “The shooters in at least 5 mass shootings have stockpiled guns & ammo using credit cards and killed 145 people. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express have the power to flag suspicious purchases and save lives. Call on them to act.”

On August 30 Breitbart News noted Democrat New York lawmakers were urging major credit card companies to create a new firearms-specific category code which would in effect flag gun purchases in the state and around the country.

On September 7, 2022, Breitbart News pointed out NY Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) was urging Visa, American Express, and Mastercard to take action and “do their part” for gun control.

On September 10, 2022, the Associated Press explained Visa will be recategorizing gun purchases and other “sales at gun shops.”

The AP noted, “[This] a major win for gun control advocates who say it will help better track suspicious surges of gun sales that could be a prelude to a mass shooting.”

Until now, gun and ammo purchases have shown up under a broad category, like sporting goods.

But Visa’s move to comply with Democrat and gun control group demands means such purchases will have a distinct firearm-related moniker, making them easier to flag.

The NRA commented on Visa’s decision to recategorize gun purchases:

The ISO’s decision to create a firearm specific code is nothing more than a capitulation to anti-gun politicians and activists bent on eroding the rights of law-abiding Americans one transaction at a time.

This is not about tracking or prevention or any virtuous motivation – it’s about creating a national registry of gun owners.

Buy local pay cash - not as many as you will gain with a few clips of holes at the target.

Cash will be banned in the New Economy, comrade.

When you think it's time to bury your guns, or move them onto the black market, it is really time to take them out.

Of course. But barter can be done with silver and gold. That will never change.

My two favorite colors, and also my favorite Christmas song

Pre ‘82 pennies, worth $.02 (copper)
Post ‘82 pennies, some folks melt them down to use for ammo ;-)

GOA, NRA, SAF: Credit Card Companies’ Shift Sets Stage for Gun Sale Data Collection

AWR HAWKINS 12 Sep 2022

Gun Owners of America (GOA), the Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), and the National Rifle Association (NRA) are warning that the credit card companies’ capitulation to Democrat pressure to recategorize gun purchases sets the state for gun sale data collection.

The Washington Times quoted GOA senior VP Erich Pratt suggesting the recategorization of gun sales is “the latest attempt by anti-gun lunatic activists to pressure corporations into collecting their own business partners’ data in a way that threatens their privacy, as well as the privacy of the millions of customers who rely on these services for electronic transactions each year.”

The NRA’s Lars Daleside said, “With a few keystrokes, this new code creates a list of people who purchased firearms, ammunition and firearm-related accessories – that’s the very definition of a registry. It’s an attempt to outsource the creation of a gun owner registry, something that the federal government is prohibited from doing.”

And SAF executive VP Alan Gottlieb described the recategorization efforts as “another attempt to disrupt and demonize people from buying firearms and ammunition by violating privacy rights and creating a database of gun owners.”

Gottlieb added, “It is being done to hurt online sales. Guns.com and gunbroker.com and others are targets. The gun prohibition lobby wants to shut down all Internet sales even if the firearms have to be delivered from local dealers with background checks.”

Breitbart News reported that Visa issued an announcement on September 10, 2022, that it would be recategorizing the way purchases from gun stores are labeled.

This announcement came after weeks of pressure from Gabby Giffords, her gun control group, Democrat lawmakers in New York, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) — all claiming that labeling gun purchases under categories such as sporting goods or general merchandise was not sufficient.

Hochul went so far as to contend that major credit card companies need to take action and “do their part” for gun control.

Writing in the New York Times’ Deal Book, Andrew Ross Sorkin, a proponent of recategorizing gun sales, suggested the new labels could be used by banks to halt payment on guns if banks so choose.

Sorkin suggested that “the payments industry needs to develop and refine software algorithms for identifying suspicious activity based on the merchant codes.”

He noted that once the algorithms have been developed, “Banks could then either allow those transactions, or block them and file suspicious activity reports with the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, which would ideally also create a system to quickly forward that information to local law enforcement and the F.B.I.”

Go buy a pre paid credit card, then go buy the gun. It's not that hard to bypass.

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any way to stop the credit card companies from flagging purchases.

Sure there is:

Bank Freedom Act of 2022 - § USC 210 Sec 47 It shall be a Class II felony for any bank, credit company, lending institution, brokerage house, pawnshop et al, to internally code sales of firearms, accessories and ammunition with a unique identifying code capable of being digitally stored and searched, that links a sale to an individual person.

Democrats aim to create a comprehensive national list of gun owners. In a major victory for gun control advocates, American Express, Mastercard, and Visa agreed to help the government track firearm sales.

Federal law explicitly prohibits the creation of a federal firearm registry, and it requires that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System erase background check information within 24 hours of completion and that it not keep a database. Yet in 2016, the Government Accountability Office called out the Obama administration for holding on to the data, and the Biden administration continues to compile digital records.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives has collected nearly one billion firearm purchase records from gun dealers who have gone out of business. The government has now digitized the records of nearly 866 million transactions, including some 54 million from 2021 alone.

Countries such as Canada, the U.K., and Australia use registration to ban and confiscate guns—and they aren't alone. California, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., have also used registration to learn who legally owned different types of guns before banning them.

Credit card companies can help fill in the gaps regarding recent purchases of guns and ammunition. And they have presumably agreed to do so in hope of protecting themselves from lawsuits. Supposedly, this will make Americans safer. Last Wednesday, Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul claimed that credit card companies flagging "suspicious activity" was important "to combat gun violence." Other gun control advocates say they want to track "suspicious" sales that "could potentially lead to a mass shooting."

Given that gun buyers who use credit cards have already passed background checks to see if they can legally buy guns, what "suspicious" activities could credit card companies possibly look for? Is buying two or three guns evidence of suspicious activity? The majority of mass public shootings since 1998 only used one gun. Do you look for people who buy AR-15s, America's most popular rifle? Put aside that even the Associated Press now recognizes that these aren't "weapons of war" and are no different than other hunting rifles, only rarely do mass public shootings involve rifles and no other type of firearm.

Should we be suspicious if someone purchases a couple hundred rounds of ammunition? People can easily use that many rounds at a shooting range in an afternoon.

The credit card companies likely compiled the information because they were worried that, if someone used their cards to buy guns later used in a crime, they would be sued.

Despite what people see on TV crime shows like Law & Order, gun registration doesn't help law enforcement solve crimes. Police in jurisdictions from Hawaii to New York that have had registration for decades can't point to any crimes that they have been able to solve. Even entire countries such as Canada haven't had success. If guns are left at a crime scene and are registered to the person who committed the crime, it is possible to trace the gun back to the criminal. But guns are virtually never left at crime scenes, and in the few times they are, they aren't registered to the person who committed the crime.

So why do Democrats keep calling for a costly policy that does nothing to reduce crime? Why do they insist on knowing who owns which guns?

If Republicans take control of Congress in November, they will be able to investigate these actions and pass budget restrictions that prevent the Biden administration from compiling its registration list.

They eliminated the 1st Amendment by working with the “private” sector, now they will do it with the 2nd Amendment. Ain't leftist fascism grand?

I read somewhere a few days ago people are attacking the card companies by claiming they're being negligent with their fiduciary duties relevant to their stockholders.
