Leno only left the tonight show because he thought he could do better with his own show in prime-time. Leno sucked in prime-time and had very bad ratings for that time-slot so the network cancelled his show. Then Leno realized he wasn't ready to retire so he wanted to go back to the tonight show, the only problem was they signed a contract with Conan to do it. I don't blame Conan one bit for being mad at them and Leno for wanting to break the deal they made with him. Conan caters to a different audience than Leno does and despite not pulling in his ratings, he does have enough of an audience to have his own show now himself.
I don't want to distract too much from the overall thread because clearly this isn't the point but I actually read up on this.
What happened is when Conan was doing gangbusters at 12:30 some other networks started singing in his ear about a better time slot and NBC said "hey don't go. Stick around 5 more years and we'll give you Leno's spot".
They also told Leno "Hey we know you're #1 but we like Conan so we're going to give him your spot in 5 years". At the time Leno probably thought he would retire in five years so he agreed.
Suddenly it's time to pay the piper. Five years go by and Leno is still #1 and there is no reason to replace him. But they have the deal with Conan. They try to have both - So they move Jay to 10 and Conan to 11:30. Both shows fail and NBC which for ten years had the best late night on TV was in deep shit.
Long story short Conan refused to go back to his own slot and made himself out to be a martyr even though NBC paid him 50 million dollars to not work. When Leno went back he again got the ratings that Conan didn't.
Conan got fired because his ratings weren't good - not some evil plot to take down a 6'5 redheaded Irishman.
When you don't perform well for your employer - you lose your job. That's life. I was annoyed with the whole Conan thing because he made himself out to be some sort of victim and all the hipsters I know were feeling so sorry for him.
I've lost jobs before too. I never whined and I never got 50 million for sitting on my ass at home. That's life.
Long story short I don't watch much late night TV. But I do think Leno got mistreated in the media and in public perception. Plus he's had Ron on more than the other guys have so I like him.
