[Video] Rand Paul on State of the Union w/ Dana Bash 4/12/15

On the foreign policy question he did well but I wish he would come out and say that his non-interventionist foreign policy is the historical conservative and Republican foreign policy. Foreign adventures abroad has historically been a liberal idea. The neocons are just liberals who became Republicans during the Cold War.

I agree. I'm not sure why he doesn't refute the assertion that supporting intervention overseas is a "right wing position." As you said, historically non intervention has been the conservative position.

I'm very pleased that he made the correct statement that he was never angry or raised his voice in these interviews. And I'm glad he mentioned the Eliot Spitzer interview. And that it would be sexist to pull punches in a debate with Hillary.

Because that line of reasoning didn't play well for Ron and made him into too much of an idealogue. Rand's not that way. Notice the nuanced way he really doesn't try to label or get too philosophical. He's much more about policy that moves the right way and really only wants to talk about that, both for himself and his opponents.

I don't think it's a winning strategy to try and out 'conservative' or 'to the left of Obama' each other. Those are silly topics to worry about anyway. Rand likes to point to the Iowa poll that splits the GOP down the middle with more and less intervention, with him representing the 'less intervention' side. Whether or not it is left, right, or center is kind of beside the point.

It's not a matter of which position is more conservative, but which position makes the most sense. He's not going to say that intervention is always wrong or always right. He's balancing the continuum from a position of strong national defense, as a strong thoughtful leader careful about spending America's treasure and soldiers' lives.

I like it; it's refreshing.

To the OP - thanks! I was worried about how this interview might go; silly me - this is Rand we're talking about!!

Thats some horrible video.. Lies and misconstruing things. Good thing nobody watches CNN.

I agree and I don't believe that Rand flip flopped on anything. There's a lot of grey area on a matter of complex issues. There is not always a yes or no answer to the question. His opinions have changed but so have the situations.

I can't stand these hacks like list Adam Kokesh who don't see the brilliance in his strategy and and dont realize that you cant always satisfy everybody.

She could not get him to say anything good about Hillary. He knew if he did, that clip would be in an attack ad by the end of the day.

Speaking of the 3am line. That spot can be soooo co-opted. Can I suggest a commercial?

Start with the same style intro but shorter, then cut to a shot of "Hillary" laying in bed, 3am on the alarm clock. The phone next to the clock rings. Then have a Bill voice-alike saying "Hill, wake up. It's 3am. Phone is ringing." "She" grunts something about Benghazi and rolls away from the phone. The phone keeps ringing through the rest of the ad. Throw a snore in there.

Fuckin genius.

How about she says "What difference does it make?"

Superb performance.

Highlights (paraphrasing)

Dana: "So you're to the left of Obama on foreign policy, right, right?"
Rand: "Well, the neocons in my party have the same recklessly aggressive foreign policy as the president, so....where do they fit on your spectrum?"

Dana: "So you flip-flopped on military spending, right, right?"
Rand: "No, I've never been dead-set against more military spending, but I do actually care about balancing the budget...unlike a certain Floridian Senator."

I lost some respect for Adam recently. Though he is becoming more of a "sovereign citizen"/An-Cap than a libertarian.
