US air strike in Syria kills nearly 85 civilians 'mistaken for Isil fighters'

A US air strike killed nearly 60 civilians, including children, in Syria on Tuesday after the coalition mistook them for Islamic State fighters.

Some eight families were hit as they tried to flee fighting in their area, in one of the single deadliest strikes on civilians by the alliance since the start of its operations in the war-torn country.

Pictures of the aftermath of the dawn strikes on the Isil-controlled village of Tokhar near Manbij in northern Syria showed the bodies of children as young as three under piles of rubble.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strikes appeared to have been carried out in error, with the civilians mistaken for Islamist militants.

It is thought Tuesday’s bombing was among the first by jets taking off from Incirlik air base in Turkey since it reopened after the failed coup.

The area has seen intense fighting between extremists and members of the US-backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) that have been advancing towards the Isil stronghold of Manbij under the cover of intense airstrikes by the US-led coalition.

The coalition has carried out more than 450 air strikes around the city since the operation to take the town began in May.

The SDF, an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, is trying to seize the last territory held by Islamic State on the frontier with Turkey.

And people wonder why muslim children grow up to hate the west with a fury that can only be created through murdering one's family. Blowback is too soft a term and I refuse to use it anymore. It's terrorism, period.

Most don't care. They were Mooslims and believe in Sharia law. Got to kill them there to keep them from coming here. /s

But, yes, the fact that the U.S. Government is a terrorist organization goes right over some heads.

carpet bomb em...bomb the sh*t out of ISIS!!! MURICA!!!

I believe that's a direct quote from Ted Cruz.... SMH.....

Having served 27 months in Iraq... I put a face to these families and my soul aches when I read that the US has killed even more. I wish this government would seriously just burn down. The world would be safer if we just minded our own damn business.

My guess is there's more "thoughts and prayers" sent towards America than any other entity on the planet.

Cuz we're so awesome of course.

I can't listen to you whiners. The gov is providing you with a roof over your head and enough money to have a decent meal almost every day. Some of you even get to enjoy an occasional nookie. The bombing of the planet and killing millions of other people is a small perk for somebody tasked with such a monumental burden. Shut up already!

I'm glad somebody finally had the guts to say what is sorely needed around here.

Barrel bombs kill more than 3,000 civilians in Syria since 2014, Report says
MIDDLE EAST, NEWS May 5, 2015

Accounts of atrocities emerged in new Amnesty International report ‘Death everywhere’

Syrian government forces have caused death and devastating injuries to civilians by dropping barrel bombs on schools, hospitals, mosques and crowded markets in opposition-controlled areas of Aleppo, Amnesty International has alleged in a new report.

The accusations come in a report released on Tuesday, two days after the regime bombed a school and community centre in a rebel-held district in the city where students were sitting exams.

Based on more than 100 interviews with current and former residents – many of them survivors and activists – and analysis of images and videos from the besieged city, the 74-page report documents “unthinkable atrocities”. These include air strikes that have mostly killed civilians, as well as arbitrary detention and torture by both sides of the conflict, it says.

Attacks using barrel bombs — oil drums filled with explosives and shrapnel and dropped by aircraft — killed more than 3,000 civilians in Aleppo governorate last year, the report said, and have helped create a climate of fear.

“I saw children without heads, body parts everywhere. It was how I imagine hell to be.”

The Amnesty International report finds that barrel bombs — an oil or fuel tank packed with shards of metal — have been dropped with growing frequency in recent months, forcing schools and hospitals to operate out of underground bunkers. Local activists recorded more than 85 barrel bomb attacks in the last month alone, according to the report.

“Widespread atrocities, in particular the vicious and unrelenting aerial bombardment of civilian neighborhoods by government forces, have made life for civilians in Aleppo increasingly unbearable, said Philip Luther, Director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa program.

The report was based on eyewitness accounts from 78 former residents and 29 professionals, which were verified with video evidence of the devastation.

More than 3,000 civilians died in barrel-bomb attacks in Aleppo province from January 2014 to March 2015, along with 35 fighters, and over 12,000 have been killed by the weapon across Syria since 2012, according to monitoring groups. Last month alone, 110 people died in the city in 85 attacks. Assad categorically denies that barrel bombs even exist.

But, according to data gathered by rights organisations, the devices have struck dozens of public markets, mosques, schools, hospitals and medical centres in Aleppo.

Barrel bombs are not "smart bombs"- there is little control over what they hit. Syrian caused civilian deaths are "propaganda" while US deaths are deliberate. I see.

Story also reported in RT- Russia Today- Syria's ally in the war. https://www.rt.com/news/aleppo-warplanes-strike-bombing-732/

If blood thirsty jihadists were in my town trying to take over the country and destroy it, I wouldn't mind if the govt dropped a few bombs near me to eliminate the problem. Now I would only have a problem if the country sponsoring those jihadists were the ones dropping the bombs.

The problem with barrel bombs is that they cannot be dropped fast enough. The faster you eliminate the jihadi threat in Syria, the safer the territory would be for all Syrians.

Viva SAA, SyAF, Hezbollah, RuAF and all the other local militias fighting for an independent Syria.

I hold this type of violence deep in my heart and will never forget the faces of the dead children and their grief stricken families. I will never forget these images.

Accurate bombing relies on intelligence. A low flying helicopter (dropping barrel bombs) might have more information on the scene than an operator halfway around the world (launching guided munitions, so-called " smart bombs").
