What's the reference to thistles about?

It's something Barrex got me started doing for "bump"s. Put something there instead of just bump. I had just been pulling some thistles out of my garden (without gloves) and got quite a few of the needles in my fingers, had finally got the last one (I think) out before bumping, so mentioned it to keep from being boring.
