U.K. Government Orders 10,000 Taser Stun Guns to Protect Police

Nov. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Home Secretary Jacqui Smith ordered 10,000 Taser stun guns, allocating the defense weapons to all 43 police forces in England and Wales after a trial in 10 districts.

“I am proud that we have one of the few police services around the world that do not regularly carry firearms and I want to keep it that way,” Smith said in an e-mail today. “But everyday the police put themselves in danger to protect us, the public. They deserve our support, so I want to give the police the tools they tell me they need to confront dangerous people.

I'm sure the Tasers will be nothing more than a false sense of security for the unarmed tea drinking panzi's over in the UK.

I'd rather the cops have tasers so they can't fucking shoot people dead! Let the real people have all the guns. :D;)

Tasers can kill you tho and a lot of times are an excuse for misuse of power of authority and can used as a "punishment" at the hand of those who may be having a bad day. I know of a case in Florida where cops repeatedly tased an underage teenager at a party with alcohol. Apparently cops show up and kids start running. Cops chased one kid over a fence and tased him like 26 times and killed as a result.

Then there was the "Don't tase me bro!!" incident. I hate these things!

I agree with you. SOME of the cops here certainly abuse them but at least they don't rely on them to save their own life if their in danger. So I guess we are trading one problem for another. I certainly wouldn't trust a taser to save my life.

I hope the people who do get tased when they shouldn't be sue the fuck out of the police departments. The bad thing is in today's society we don't hold the police chiefs accountable so all that happens is the taxpayer then shells out a bunch of money of the fuckers who were responsible keep their jobs.

Yeah, but I guess it's better than those famous horror stories about cops who break into the wrong house and shoot innocent people dead. It's a lose-lose situation with bad/corrupt cops.

Funny that our 2nd right is to own a gun. I have to read the English constitution. It might say you have the right to bend over and accept it. Yes ok don't flame I did 2 minutes of research and found they don't have a constitution.

Ah heck. That's England. Let the taser darts fly and you will be hearing amidst the screams: " I say!" and "You'll be hearing from my solicitor" and stuff like that.

Disarmed pansies. You can beat them with bunny slippers on sticks.

Actually they do - it's just not "codified" like most countries. It's mostly tradition and snippets of written laws such as the Magna Carta and 1689 Bill of Rights.

In fact it's the 1689 Bill of Rights that the US version was based on - including the right to keep and bear arms. However, in the English version, it said "as allowed by law". So it was pretty easy for the British lawmakers to outlaw gun ownership.

Needless to say, Britain has always traditionally been a fairly crime-free nation. That is, until recently when not only guns but also self-defense have been outlawed. Since the 1997 gun ban, gun crimes have increased four-fold and other crimes such as burglary have increased many fold. You are now five times more likely to be mugged in London than in New York.

What makes me sick however is that Brits keep pointing to the US as a reason to keep guns outlawed. They don't seem to realize that the majority of gun crimes here are centered in places where they have gun bans just as stringent as in the UK.

I wonder if there is a market for taser resistant clothes that are woven with conductive fibers, sort of like a fencing lame.
