A judge's ruling that drivers must become regular employees earning at least minimum wage plus benefits and can no longer be contract employees may cause Uber and Lyft to temporarily shutter their service at least until the November election.

That completely destroys the ride-sharing business model. Drivers could go online, and go to some place that isn't busy and earn minimum wage doing nothing. No driver would do that today, today drivers are motivated to go online when it's busy and go to busy areas so they can earn money. This is why it is so easy for people to get rides with ride sharing companies.

So Uber and Lyft may shut down in California until the November election, when voters will get to decide if they want to overturn it.

Uber and Lyft better not shut down.

It could be the best possible outcome, to shutdown temporarily so their customers and drivers notice and make sure to get out to vote for freedom in November. Well, at least more freedom. Unfortunately the bill is narrowly tailored to carve out their industry and still applies some rules, but it would allow the structure of their business to remain intact. It would be a lot better if they could just reverse it completely.

It is CA Prop 22
