Trump’s Proposed Iron Dome-Style Missile Shield Is Ill-Suited For U.S.

Jun 17, 2024

If re-elected president, Donald Trump has repeatedly declared he will build a “great Iron Dome” to defend the United States, drawing comparisons to Israel’s short-range anti-rocket system and the Strategic Defense Initiative proposed in the 1980s. While by far the most well-known Israeli-made air defense system, the Iron Dome, or even a similar type of system, is perhaps among the least suited for the United States’ main missile defense requirements.

“By next term we will build a great Iron Dome over our country,” Trump said Friday. “We deserve a dome. We deserve it all, made state of the art.”

“It’s a missile defense shield, and it’ll all be made in America,” he added.

It is far from the first time the former president has made this proposal and referenced the Israeli system. He has also compared his proposed national missile defense to the Strategic Defense Initiative, commonly known as Star Wars, first proposed by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. SDI envisaged a series of ground and space-based missile and laser systems that could destroy incoming nuclear missiles threatening the U.S.

Incidentally, during the brief 2021-22 premiership of former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, his government enthusiastically promoted the Iron Beam laser defense system under development in Israel. Israel expressed grand plans to eventually have Iron Beam systems on the ground, in the air, and even in space, seemingly taking at least some inspiration from the SDI concept.

Israel can under these conditions better cooperate with the U.S. to counter real threats to the region and the West's security. Mr. Netanyahu can highlight his desire to cooperate more closely with the United States on anti-missile defense in order to remove the threat of blackmail which even a weak and distant army can pose to either state. Not only would such cooperation on missile defense counter a tangible physical threat to Israel's survival, but it would broaden Israel's base of support among many in the United States Congress who may know little about Israel, but care very much about missile defense. Such broad support could be helpful in the effort to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

Whether it's ill suited or well suited depends on the reason for having it.

Trump's main motivation is to spend a lot of money, nothing more, nothing less.

This proposal is probably well suited to that goal.

Print trillions and give it all to Izrael, Ukraine and the Defense Contractors.

Stop paying taxes.

Ill suited and Ill conceived, won't protect anything.

But as long as the Israeli and Deep State defense firms make money, he's going to be for it.

First he had the WALL obsession. Now it's the DOME obsession.

See the theme? Israel has its wall. Israel has its dome.

Nothing about lasting positive change. He's a very limited guy mentally.

He's a very limited guy mentally.

That's what the people want.

On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.
