President Donald Trump's military parade in DC is likely to cost nearly as much as the now canceled military exercise with South Korea that Trump called "tremendously expensive" and said cost "a fortune," three US defense officials tell CNN.

The parade, which is now scheduled to take place on November 10, is currently estimated to cost approximately $12 million, the officials said. One official called the number "a planning figure," saying cost estimates could still change as planning develops.

"We save a fortune by not doing war games, as long as we are negotiating in good faith - which both sides are!" Trump tweeted in June following his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

North Korea had long sought an end to the exercises, which it says are provocative. US military leaders have said the exercises are necessary to maintain the readiness of US troops in South Korea.

Pentagon spokesman Col. Rob Manning told reporters earlier this month that the now-cancelled US-South Korea Freedom Guardian Exercise was estimated to cost approximately $14 million.

"The intent for the parade," is to coincide with the 100th anniversary of World War I, Manning said.

The war ended on November 11, 1918 and France's President Emmanuel Macron plans to host world leaders for a parade marking the centenary of the war's end.

Trump proposed the DC parade shortly after attending a Bastille Day military parade in Paris.

CNN previously reported that the parade would focus on celebrating veterans and involve US troops in period uniforms as well as US military aircraft but no heavy vehicles like tanks in order to prevent damage to infrastructure.

Trump says 'no rush' on North Korea nuclear negotiations

President Donald Trump said Wednesday there is "no rush" in its negotiations with North Korea over Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program.

"Russia has agreed to help with North Korea, where relationships with us are very good and the process is moving along. There is no rush, the sanctions remain! Big benefits and exciting future for North Korea at end of process!" Trump tweeted.

The tweet came in a series of early morning messages from the President as he defended his inflammatory news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, earlier in the week.

On Tuesday, while clarifying remarks he made at the news conference, Trump also said there was "no time limit" on North Korea and that sanctions would remain in place.

"A major topic of discussion was North Korea and the need for it to remove its nuclear weapons. Russia has assured us of its support. President Putin said he agrees with me 100%, and they'll do whatever they have to do to try and make it happen," Trump said.

"Discussions are ongoing and they're going very, very well. We have no rush for speed ... We have no time limit. We have no speed limit. We have -- we're just going through the process. But the relationships are very good. President Putin is going to be involved in the sense that he is with us."

Although the Trump administration formerly called for an immediate denuclearization of North Korea, Trump and administration officials in recent months have backed off that demand.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo appeared to concur with that assessment earlier this month. He said negotiations with North Korea are a "decades-long challenge" that involves North Korea making a fundamental shift in its strategic decision making.

US President Donald Trump says he wishes people would “sit up at attention” for him like North Koreans do for their leader Kim Jong-un, a joke that sparked instant outrage on social media and cable news.

It was the latest example of a Trump remark about strongmen leaders - delivered in a deadpan style - to fall flat and fuel perceptions among his critics that the president admires autocrats.

Trump was asked during a Fox News Channel interview outside the West Wing on Friday if he would invite Kim to the White House. The two met earlier this week to begin to discuss Pyongyang’s nuclear program, a summit marked by what Trump said was friendly chemistry between them.

Mr Trump also said he would like Americans to “sit up at attention” when he speaks like North Koreans do for Kim.

“Hey, he is the head of a country and I mean he is the strong head,” the president said. “Don’t let anyone think anything different.

“He speaks and his people sit up at attention. I want my people to do the same.”

Kim is suspected of ordering the assassination of his half-brother in February and the execution of his uncle in 2013. UN investigations have also reported human rights violations, the use of political prison camps and the widespread use of starvation as a tool to enforce political loyalty.

However, Mr Trump later said he was kidding and that reporters “don’t understand sarcasm”.

Trump has given himself high praise following his summit with Kim Jong-un, claiming that he has “largely solved” the North Korean nuclear problem.

Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Mr Trump said president Barack Obama told him before he took office that the “most dangerous problem” for the United States was North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

“I have solved that problem,” the president said.

“Now we’re getting it memorialised and all but that problem is largely solved. We signed a very good document.

North Korea Hasn't Started Returning American War Dead Despite Promise

More than a month after North Korea pledged to immediately return some American war dead, the promise is unfulfilled.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who traveled to Pyongyang this month to press the North Koreans further, said Wednesday the return could begin “in the next couple of weeks.” But it could take months or years to positively identify the bones as those of specific American servicemen.

In a joint statement at their Singapore summit, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un committed to recovering the remains of prisoners of war and those missing in action decades after the Korean War — “including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.”

That was more than a month ago, on June 12. Although Trump said eight days later that the repatriation had happened, it had not. It still has not. So, it was not “immediate,” though the Stars and Stripes newspaper reported from South Korea on Tuesday that the North has agreed to transfer as many as 55 sets of remains next week. The Pentagon and the State Department declined to comment on any specifics promised by the North.

“We’re making progress along the border to get the return of remains, a very important issue for those families,” Pompeo said Wednesday at the White House. “I think in the next couple of weeks we’ll have the first remains returned, that’s the commitment, so progress certainly being made there.”

Likely also to prove untrue is the part of the Trump-Kim statement that said the North had war remains “already identified.” It apparently has bones and perhaps associated personal effects, but history shows that any remains handed over by the North are likely to be difficult to identify. He said this element of the Singapore statement “reflects a near total ignorance of the role of science” in accounting for war dead.

There is even some doubt that any remains turned over would be of Americans. Trump admitted as much in a CBS News interview July 14.

“You know, remains are complicated,” he said. “Some of the remains, they don’t even know if they are remains.”

They do not promise to dencularize as the headline claims. They do say they will make moves only if the US makes moves (but no moves are specified).
