Also- this article, as well as Trump, upbraid Obama for not saying "Islamic Terrorists". My POV on this is that Obama is right.
90+% of Muslims are not terrorists and do not condone this terror; Plus, a large % of the "Islamic Terrorists" are not active Muslims.
Should the ME call Americans, Christian Terrorists? Are the drones bombers Christian Terrorists? Were the bombed hospitals in the ME terrorized by Christians? Just think what an uprising that would cause in the West, if IS insisted that we were all Christian Terrorists.
. People who blow things up while shouting Allah Akbar are indeed Islamic terrorists. Christians who shoot up abortion clinics are indeed Christian Terrorists and we should absolutely call them what they are.
So Obama is right when he says ISIL, because it defines a larger geographic area than ISIS does, even if it's using an outdated word for the region, because you think it means he thinks it's important to be very specific, and ising ISIL will help us realize that ISIS isn't just in I and S. (A fact that nobody believes anyway, but that's an aside.)
But Obama is also right when he refuses to use a specific phrase to narrow down a violent subsect of a specific group when talking about terror, because you think he thinks it would confuse people to be so specific.
I see a pattern here.
