Trump, Carson threaten to boycott next GOP debate

http://www.cnn.com/2015/10/15/politics/trump-carson-cnbc-republican-debate-threaten-pullout/

(CNN)—Republican front-runners Donald Trump and Ben Carson are threatening to pull out of the next Republican primary debate if the hosts don't agree to their demands.

In a letter to CNBC, which is hosting the next debate, the two candidates said they would not participate in the Oct. 28 debate "if it is longer than 120 minutes including commercials and does not include opening and closing statements."

In a conference call between Republican National Committee officials and top advisers to the presidential campaigns on Thursday, Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski also said that Trump would consider skipping the debate if his terms were not met.

The demand for a two-hour debate comes in the wake of CNN's decision to extend the previous GOP debate to three hours, leaving some of the candidates visibly exhausted.

One source who was on the call said it was clear from Lewandowski's remarks that Trump had no interest in participating in the CNBC debate, which will be held in Boulder, Colorado.

In a statement, CNBC said, "Our goal is to host the most substantive debate possible. Our practice in the past has been to forego opening statements to allow more time to address the critical issues that matter most to the American people. We started a dialogue yesterday with all of the campaigns involved and we will certainly take the candidates' views on the format into consideration as we finalize the debate structure."

Trump also took to Twitter on Thursday to protest the terms of the debate.

"The @GOP should not agree to the ridiculous debate terms that @CNBC is asking unless there is a major benefit to the party," he wrote.

".@CNBC is pushing the @GOP around by asking for extra time (and no criteria) in order to sell more commercials," he continued. "Why is the @GOP being asked to do a debate that is so much longer than the just-aired and very boring #DemDebate?"

I do not agree with Mr Trump on most of the issues, but I strongly support him on this one. I appreciate his effort to stage the exit from the race in such a graceful manner.

So they are arguing over a lack of opening/closing statements and a proposed running time of 2 hours and 16 minutes vs 2 hours?

Am I reading this right?

Sounds like they're afraid of a substantive debate. Or maybe they just want to limit the time their competition has, knowing they're already bound to get most of the time and a reduction in time won't effect them as harshly.

Great! See ya, adios. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Gee-without Trump, the entertainment value goes way down. Half the audience won't tune it in.

(interesting that the site chosen is the University of Colorado- one of the more liberal public universities in the People's Republic of Boulder- Berkeley of the Rockies).

CNBC will cave cause they want THAT MONEY it will bring with Trump in center stage blabbing a bunch of nonsense.

Wish they wouldn't cave and instead have a substantive REAL debate about issues instead of cheering for who has the best one liners like that qualifies some idiot on stage to be President.

Did Priebus know they were doing this?

Trump just doesn't want to stay on his feet for more than two hours! I remember him complaining about it after one of the other debates. What does he think being president will be like?

Anyway - what about the actual GOP? Aren't the debate terms up to them? Has Reince Priebus made any response to this? I'd be surprised if they don't have rules regarding candidates trying to dictate the debate rules - maybe this disqualifies them?

The front runners and in command here. Most of these debates have been tabloid cat fights shows. Hardly ever is it ever seriously about important issues.

the RNC wanted it longer to boost Rubio and Carly. Trump and Carson know their weaknesses, and they will prevail on this one

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Good riddance, CNBC should tell them oh well, the ratings would go up without them as it would be a huge news story everywhere and more than normal would tune in to see what happens.

Trump just posted on his Facebook page that CNBC agreed to his terms and limited the debate to 2 hours.

CNBC, spineless Trump kowtowers. Seriously, if this is about ratings, MOST PEOPLE DONT EVEN HAVE CNBC. Have some effin principle.
