Tornado slams OK school

As an aside, this isn't uncommon. The school is reachable, there are probably rescue units near there even on a good day, and the buildings were large which means a whole lot of debris. The houses were demolished, but people got into windowless rooms, etc.. They are difficult to get to. There are people with backhoes and other equipment helping clear debris from on top of people, and there are people getting to hospitals.

There are also concerns about a movie theater, but it could be the structure fared better.

Fox is reporting that the rescue efforts at the second elementary school are now recovery efforts. They anticipate 24 dead 3rd graders.

Just an update. My cousin works at Moore High school. The school was just north of the tornadoes path. They are fine but their home is was right in the path, so its probably gone. The rest of her family is safe. Aunt and Uncle were visiting family in Norman (didn't realize my two other cousins and family had moved there, so they are fine. Grandparents live in Midwest city which is close to Moore but seems to have been missed, unlike the one in 99 which took out both cities, and my other uncle works north of OKC...so I assume he is good.

All in all, things look ok. Thanks for the prayers.

I have never lived in this area so pardon if this sound naive......but why don't they have storm cellars?

I was born and raised in Oklahoma and a whole lot of schools do have storm cellars. A number of individuals do too. My family did.

The forecasts weren't for a major tornado outbreak, unfortunately. We have a lot to learn.

It is also the same location from the 1999 outbreak that had some of the most incredible damage I've seen photos of.

I believe the 99 tornado (which actually hit the same area) is the strongest, or second strongest tornado ever recorded. 300 mph wind gusts at 100 ft. That's unbelievable.

According to the mets on some of the sites I visit, pictures indicate it was at least an EF4, possible an EF5. Will have to wait for a ground team to survey.

In the video clip Jeff Poor posted, there is no mention of global warming. In the writing and title by Jeff Poor, he mentions global warming but doesn't show the Senator doing it. It is dishonest of Jeff. He seems to be trying to play off the tragedy to get more hits to his blog, but I could be wrong.

Even NH has tornadoes. I think 1 person died in Deerfield a few years ago. Obviously, they are rare up here but they occasionally happen.

Where I lived before NH, tornadoes would destroy areas of downtown and he burbs every few years. Even in a neighborhood I used to live in, several homes were completely destroyed and pretty much all of them were damaged.

As for moving to NH, you might want to visit 1 of the 3 big yearly events up here. Liberty Forum happens during the Winter. Bardo Farm Fest happens during Memorial Day weekend, that's next weekend. Porcfest is th 2nd to last weekend of June this year.
