Why did you guys ban this song? I'd like to get it in quadraphonic.
I actually had to google that. The national anthem isn't forbidden, but it turns-out the first two verses are no-longer sung for PC-reasons. A court ruling determined they were not illegal 'because the song did not 'belong to' an outlawed political party..
The first verse describes a geographical area between some rivers I never heard-of which apparently delineates a territory larger than the current German state. This is objectionable because it proclaims either German State territory which doesn't legally belong to the country, or another interpretation is it describes a region as being culturally German irrespective of state boundaries. I can't be arsed to research more.
The un-pc-ness of the 2nd verse is actually pretty funny, imo. Here i is:
Deutsche Frauen, deutsche Treue
Deutscher Wein und deutscher Sang
Sollen in der Welt behalten
Ihren alten schönen Klang
Uns zu edler Tat begeistern
Unser ganzes Leben lang
German maids and german faithfulness
German wine and German song
Shall maintain in the world
Their beautiful tenor
And motivate to noble deeds
Our whole life long
As offensive as German Nationalism has been, this seems rather sweet. What don't they like? Praising our womenfolk?
