When the Iron Curtain was drawn over Poland, there was much dissatisfaction, longing for freedom, all that jazz. Nightly, most Poles would return to their crummy apartments from their crummy jobs and only then express their dissatisfaction quietly into their pillow. Maybe they would share their dissatisfaction with a neighbor but not above a whisper.

Then something happened to change all that. The Pope came home to Poland. Church bells rung out across the country. Millions came to see him speak. The Soviet-backed government couldn't simply block the Pope's visit, but make no mistake, they did everything short of that to make his visit a quiet one. They told Poles that they couldn't drive to see the Pope. The Poles walked instead. The commies used various forms of intimidation to discourage turnout. The Poles were more bold than they realized.

And the Pope spoke about the dignity of human life. He poke about freedom. He spoke about a revolution of the spirit. But perhaps even more important, the Poles started speaking to each other once again. They realized just how powerful they were. Suddenly the commies began to look just a little impotent. 2 years later, the workers solidarity movement began.

So to all the laptop patriots who have doubts about this march, take you skepticism elsewhere, because a lack of self confidence has never been part of this campaign. Let freedom ring.
