The majority of lawmakers in the US are fully committed to the American empire, no matter the cost.
Kentucky Congressman Thomas Massie is one of the sole exceptions who recognizes the very hard limits of maintaining the US’s imperial project.
On July 18, 2022, Massie and 17 other Republicans voted against a resolution that manifested support for Finland and Sweden joining NATO.
The House passed the resolution on a 394-18 vote. Curiously, all of the opposition came from Republicans.
Two Democrats and 17 Republicans did not vote for this resolution.
According to a report by The Hill, the following Republicans voted against this bill:
On top of that, the resolution opposes any moves by the Russian Federation to counteract this latest tranche of NATO expansion. Plus, the resolution calls on NATO member nations to meet their 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) commitment.
The recent drive to have Finland and Sweden join NATO came after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
On July 18, Thomas Massie went on Twitter to explain his vote. He tweeted “America can’t afford to subsidize socialist Europe’s defense, nor should we. Tonight, I voted against the House Resolution urging NATO’s expansion into Sweden and Finland.”

The resolution expresses support for Finland and Sweden joining NATO. In May, both countries applied for NATO membership. This resolution calls on member states to formally support the two Nordic countries’ ascension into NATO.
On top of that, the resolution opposes any moves by the Russian Federation to counteract this latest tranche of NATO expansion. Plus, the resolution calls on NATO member nations to meet their 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) commitment.
