This is how "real" all this is for me, personally.

The one thing is, in the Manchester Townhall, the woman that asked Dr. Paul this question did not seem satisfied with his answer (that is the impression I got from it). I would hope that the campaign realizes that this area is indeed a place were lot's of people rely on work at sea. I really think that Dr. Paul's campaign should really go into more detail with regards to the repealing of the Jones Act, so he could get the people to understand what his position is. Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, are all areas where many many people rely on the sea for employment.

Sucks to lose one's job over principles.

Been there, done that.

You and me both. Then again, I saw most of those who choose to cooperate lose their jobs in the end anyway.

Many Americans have been given limited choices: work for the government in some capacity, or take charity from the government.

The routes would turned over to foreign flagged vessels with foreign crews that make about a tenth of what a comparable US rate would.

Gotcha. But I understand your dilemma. Seems to me that Ron Paul knows where he stands with regards to these types of laws but I know his focus will be the overseas spending, liberties at home (TSA, Patriot Act etc) and sound money, which is my biggest concern.

I think it would take more than 4 years to address the entire behemoth that is the Federal bureaucracy.

That is tough. He seemed to think foreign registered vessels were actually favored in it by some reason, from that clip.

I kinda know that feel. If Ron Paul is elected I'll likely lose my full ride scholarship, but that doesn't deter me. I know in the long run Paul is the best choice.

He didn't say he'd repeal all of it. He said he hadn't looked over all of it, but he was aware of places where it backfired, so unless he was shown a part that was really working he'd be inclined to repeal it.

Yep. I recently quit a very good job over principles.

Personally, I do agree with Ron on this, and do not support protectionism/tariffs. I think people from other countries and people here have every right to trade with each other, if that's what they want to do.

Regardless, I am proud to see you stand by your principles. We need more people in this country willing to look beyond their narrow, short term, fiscal self interest, if we're ever going to turn this around.

AF, ouch. Coming directly from RP must've made the sting of that realization extra poignant.

I gotta feeling that many if not all of us in the movement, whether we realize it or not, will face short term or longer pain if RP is actually elected president.

The market will re-shape itself to the new reality and it's bound to cause some jobs to go, others to be created.

I fully expect to feel the pinch or worse, but like you, I know in the end everything will be better, if not for me directly, at least for my kids & beyond.

And it will be better, much better.

It's a fairly complex issue, and, like I said, I haven't actually seen what he said.

I'll look it over when I get home, but, like I stated in my OP, my support is unwavering, regardless.

I quit over six figures a decade ago on principles, and haven't looked back. I rarely miss the money (and usually only when it comes to veterinarian bills or donating to RP) but never regret it... best thing I ever did for my own head. Staying true to your principles is the gold standard of life.

Yep, same here, though I made somewhat less. Haven't regretted it for a minute.

AF, I might be wrong, but I don't think you would lose your job, if you are good at what you do, then there will still be opportunity. All the US shipping vessels shouldn't just up and retire...

Maybe im missing something, I hope not tho. And I admire your dedication. Good luck..

Same here AF, I am a defense contractor and will certainly lose my job if Ron Paul is elected. I know it is corrupt and I know I have a cushy job making more money than if I were in the private sector.

The thing is, I was laid off this past year and tried to go into the private sector. I am an IT/software/sys admin guy. My field of expertise is so spread out thanks to hopping from contract to contract that I was in trouble when it came to finding anything in the private sector. I know several different programming languages, know many different systems and network protocols, etc. But when it comes down to it, I know as much on each subject as a junior level engineer. And I am used to a senior level salary. I got turned away again and again saying that, while I am very talented in many areas, they are looking for a "Senior X" with 10 years of experience doing "X". I have done the whole alphabet.

As a defense contractor my vast experience and my degree are beneficial because when they bid a contract they can throw my name on several different contracts that each may have a completely different requirement.

As much as I support Ron Paul and want him to win. I am hedging my bets and preparing for a life where war is always profitable. I am 4 classes away from getting my Master's degree in an easy subject. I chose an easy subject because with the DoD it does not matter what your degree is in, only that you have one. A Master's degree contractor can charge more than someone with a bachelor's.

But I hope Ron Paul wins and puts me out of a job. Put this whole corrupt industry out of a job.

Thanks to you sir. I recommend, if I may, finishing your masters, then moving to NH, where the unemployment rate is low, as is the cost of living :).

My circumstances were very similar. I make about $13K less now, but my expenses are far, far lower, so I'm wealthier overall (e.g. my car insurance is less than a third of what it was where I moved from) -- and a 2000sqft house here with 6-10 acres only runs about 200K.

Best of all, I can feel proud of what I do, and get to be part of what is quite possibly the largest and most active community, anywhere in the world, of people working to promote and restore liberty.

Whenever I talk about an RP presidency, this is exactly what I say. We're in a gigantic mess and it's going to take a while to get out of it. It's not going to be easy or pleasant. It's like someone with an addiction: there will be withdrawal, but the end is worth the pain it takes to get there.

Good on you, AF. We disagree in areas of policy, but my respect for you is immense. Keep at it.
