They are about to turn on the super-particle collider, CERN - quest for the god atom?

They just reported that the collider had a malfunction that has since been repaired, but one of the workers who knew about it did not report it for a week.
Think he/she still has a job?

side note for UFO buffs: Many sitings occur around military bases, nuclear sites, and at monemental occasions such as the crossing of the Atlantic by Columbus. This seems like something they might be interested in monitoring. I wonder if there have been any sitings around CERN lately?

edited: I just googled it, (should have done that before) and sure enough!

Hey guys,
Someone reported in the forum recently that they have seen ufos over the CERN LHC in geneva. The sightings seem to tie in with the legitimate concerns from physicists all over the world that the LHC really has potential to create a black hole (see video report below). Maybe the Ufos are monitoring the LHC - like they reportedly have done with nuclear silos, to ensure we don't stuff the world up ?

Sighting report:
I Have been staying in Thoiry, France for the past three months, and this morning at about 5:00am, i had my third UFO sighting since i've been here. The little village of thoiry is about 7 minutes drive from the headquarters of CERN which straddle the Swiss/French border, and being that there is very little around this area (apart from CERN) that may be of to interest to someone(or something) thats watching, i wonder if CERN is being surveyed.. especially since they're getting ready to launch the controversial LHC experiment, the product of which remains very unsure...

And now there will be a delay, as the thing doesn't work correctly. So, no actual experiments for a while. Does this fill us with confidence?

LOL oh my I cried on this one
insanely funny!

The ultimate goal of CERN would be to detect the Higgs boson, which may be the particle that explains mass.

We're talking much smaller scales than the atom. Atomic nuclei are made up of protons, and neutrons -- as few as one of these particles or as many as hundreds may be in a single atom.

A proton or neutron is made up of three quarks.

Quarks (or fermions in general) could be considered "as fundamental" as bosons. The photon is another example of a boson.

So, we're way past "splitting the atom" ;).

The sun is powered mainly by atomic fusion -- converting Hydrogen into Helium. As far as I know there is no belief that anything like what's happening in CERN occurs in the sun.

They are scheduled to try and SMASH ATOMS proper on December 21st 2012. Now why does that date sound familiar?
