TITLE I
SECTION1. (a) This Act may be cited as the "Selective Service Act of 1948".

DEFINITIONS
SEC. 16. When used in this title-
(b) The term "United States", when used in a geographical sense,
shall be deemed to mean the several States, the District of Columbia,
Alaska, Hawaii, Puerio Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
(c) The term "armed forces" shall be deemed to include the Army, the
Navy, the Marine Ccrps, and the Air Force.

The President is authorized- from time to time, whether or not a state of war exists, to select and induct into the *armed forces of the United States for training
and service in the manner provided in this title such number of persons as may be required to provide and maintain the personnel strengths (otherthan one-year enlistee personnel strengths) of the respective armed forces
authorized by section 2 of this title.
THE ARMED FORCES ARE MERCINERIES
The Act of March 7, 1942 (56 Stat. 143-148), as amended, is hereby
made applicable to persons inducted into the *armed forces pursuant to
this title.
(j)Nothing contained in this or any other Act shall be construed as
forbidding the payment of compensation by a* person, Firm, or corporation
to persons inducted into the armed forces of the United States for
training and service under this title, or to members of reserve components
of such forces now or hereafter on any type of active duty, who, prior to
their induction or order to active duty were receiving compensation from
such person, firm, or corporation.
THE ARMED FORCES DRAFT EXCLUDED THE MILITARY
(g) Subject to the authorized one-year enlistee active duty personnel
strengths established by section of this title for the respective armed forces,
the Secretaries of the Army, the Navy, and the Air Force are authorized
and directed to *accept enlistments for periods of one year in the Army of
the United States, the United States Navy or the United States Marine
Corps, and the Air Force of the United States, respectively, from among
qualified male persons between the ages of eighteen and nineteen.

NO ONE IN THE MILITARY CAN BE STATIONED OUTSIDE THE U.S.
UNDER THE WAR POWERS ACT, OR THE SELECTIVE SERVICE ACT
THE MEN IN THE MILITARY STATIONED OVERSEAS CAN COME HOME
THE MILITARY EQUIPMENT BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE, NOT THE ARMED FORCES.
(h) No person who is enlisted in the Army of the Unitied States under
the provisions of subsection (g) shall be permanently assigned to duty at
any place outside of the continental 1imits of the United States; and no
person who is enlisted under the provisions of such subsection in the
United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, or the Air Force
of the United States shall be assigned lo duty al any naval or air force
installation which is located on land outside of the continental limits of
the United States.
