The Superbowl has been CANCELED!!

This holier than thou, preacher needs a big bowl of STFU gumbo! GEAUX SAINTS!!!

I can guarantee you if this tool bag's team would be in the big game he would not be posting this crap. He's just bitter that his team's not in it. GEAUX SAINTS!!!

Did the thought occur to you that not everybody watches sports so not everybody even has a team?

I think a lot of people are missing the point. For one thing while the superbowl may only be once a year, the "sports culture" is 24/7. You have grown men engaging in "fantasy football" which is just one step above Pokemon. I also disagree with the idea that we would be closer to socialism if more people took the time to learn about politics. Not unless you have no faith in the persuasiveness of your own ideas. The level of ignorance in this country is astounding. I was at dinner once and this grown woman who could tell you everything celebrity gossip, didn't know that Mexico wasn't a state. :embarrassed: (And no, she didn't think I said "New Mexico"). How do you even talk to someone like that about the issues facing our nation if she's not even sure where the borders are?

That said....I'll probably watch the superbowl.

Just to clarify I do not think that we can not persuade people but propaganda is different. In USSR 100% voted and participated. Propaganda and natural discourse are different.

Speaking about propaganda... last nights PRO BOWL on ESPN. How many times did the commentators state it was a sellout and largest crowd before/during/after the game? the last time the NFL had the PRO BOWL in CONUS was during the recession of 1980.

The upper-deck was at least 1/3 empty and the lower bowl was about 20% empty. The NFL laid off numerous employees, even in their profitable mulltibillion dollar business, which is fine, as long as they don't receive taxpayer welfare, but...

The NFL received corporate welfare for the New Orleans Saints and the Louisiana Super Dome.

The Taxpayers paid the $150 Million to repair the dome, and Millions more in "enhancements" ie... new multicolor LED scoreboards, remodeled Luxury Suites, concession stands, parking etc... taxpayer's dime. The Saints were very profitable, but did the Saints or the Super Dome pay any of the taxpayer's money back? NOPE.

If you disagree with the NFL and their abuse of the taxpayers and extravagant salaries/profits... then boycott the products that endorse and support the NFL or players.

There's a slight smell of silliness on here. I've heard "football is a dumb distraction" repeatedly on these forums... usually from the same people that often distract themselves with internet memes or other similar things.

I like football. You might not. The notion that I'm some kind of moronic slave because I understand the penalties, plays, and strategy of it all is a bit over the top.

Most people have distractions of some sort.

It's should be pretty obvious that this "issue" is in reference to the illogical mass collectivist behavior of millions of people all tripping over themselves to glue themselves to the TV AGAIN to watch more HOURS of senseless pseudo-violence while becoming amazingly emotionally invested in the perceived "outcome".

I just think there is a strong correlation between sheepish behavior and sports fans. Some people here may go against that correlation, but it still stands.

Its like people who read TIME magazine and all those tabloid mags you see at grocery store checkouts, chances are the majority of them are sheep. If you read about and are interested in how some celebrity chick accidentally flashed a camera while drunk, its going to be quite bizarre if you know anything about important matters.

I've only watched a few Superbowls my entire life. BORING. I never really enjoyed watching other people have fun. Get off the couch and go have fun yourself.

If I owned a TV, and if I was going to watch sports, I'd at least watch something more entertaining. Watching men hit balls, dribble balls, or run with balls is just plain gay.

Snowboarding, surfing, extreme sports, now that's cool. Plus, it's individualistic, not all collectivist and communist like spectator sports.

Why can't a guy be into sports and still be aware of his political surroundings?

Sports are a HUGE part of my life... I play football, basketball, and baseball for my school. I am doing something sports related year round... I watch Sportscenter every day, ESPN is my homepage, and I post at multiple sports related forums. My room is filled with sports memorabilia, posters, and trophies of mine.

That said, I still have time to support the liberty movement and continue to become educated on the problems facing our country...

So all of you that say those who love sports are mindless drones and are part of the problem, well...fuck off.

SOD is gettin upset!

Well I don't think "more interest in politics" = "masses succumbing to propaganda". And I don't think most of those who voted in the Soviet Union were at all interested in politics. In some countries you have to show up to vote in order to get your food rations.

Great. Wonderful. The guy in the video wasn't talking to you then. There's nothing wrong with watching TV occasionally either, but it's sad when more Americans can name cartoon characters than the can the 5 freedoms in the bill of rights. This is/was a commentary on America in general. Not a direct assault on everyone who ever watches a football game.

You are the exception to the rule... I wouldnt take it personal, but there will always people who will paint with a broad brush. Doesnt mean they are 100% right.. just 98.5%. ;)

I am pretty sure out of the 100 million Americans that watch the Superbowl there is a wide range of political beliefs.

As well as a bunch of people who don't give a crap about politics - which is their right.

I completely agree that it is their right to not give a crap about politics and philosophy, they are just one of many examples as to why the political system can never work. And these same people still vote, and hold a pretense of wisdom when they do so. Hence the frustration...

Yes, I am aware of that but I get the impression that this self-righteous youtube preacher is full of it.

Some might say there's a strong correlation between spending a whole shitload of time on the internet and being a socially inept loser. It's another broad brush, and it looks just as dumb when it's used by people on here as it does when used by the powers that be.

You don't "get" sports; that's fine. I don't "get" watching gymnastics, that someone mentioned earlier. Watching a bunch of underaged, undeveloped girls (and boys, but that seems a little less popular) do backflips and swing from poles seems a wee bit disturbing. I'm not drawing any conclusions about those folks, though. Some might be sickos. Some might have been gymnasts when they were younger. Some might just be impressed by what the human body can do before its bones get all rigid :p

Is there anything more "sheep"y than "donate on such and such a day!"? There's an awful lot of hypocrisy out there. Some people enjoy one sort of distraction, and some enjoy another kind. I know this is silly to some, but there are plenty of folks who can fit both political procedures and sports trivia into their brains. They can knit, and know the Preamble to the Constitution by heart. They can win their Fantasy Football league, and donate the proceeds to Debra Medina or Adam Kokesh.

The assertion on here that most folks can't is sad.
