The reputation of the regime in Washington, DC, could stand to suffer. No matter how little anyone thinks of it, they still esteem it too highly.

How much of a price are you willing to pay just so you can destroy your political enemies?

If the cost is vassalation to China or to a hegemonic global power is it worth it?

How many generations of your family are you willing to pay and subject your family to vassalation or risk of extinction?

I consider the painless option of simply taxing them for the cost and not going bankrupt much less painful and bloodless and less risky.
