The problem is that over the last 50 years the skilled laborer has gotten totally screwed.

In 1964 the minimum wage was $1.25 per hour. Silver was the currency. Today each $1 face value of junk US silver coin has approximately .715 troy ounces of silver. Of course back in 1964 a newly minted silver coin would have a higher content because no silver would have been eroded from the coin.

$1.25 1964 minimum wage x .715 equates to .89375 ounces of silver. As we all know silver has been very inexpensive the last couple of years but at today's value price of $16 that brings the $1.25 wage paid in silver in 1964 to $14.30 today.

$14/hour isn't enough for a single mother with 6 kids. If you're a single mother with 6 kids, the minimum wage should be at least $40/hour.

And it should be illegal for them to lie to employers about how many kids they have, to get a job with the lower $14/hour wage. They deserve $40, they should get $40.

Teenage black employment needs to shrink yet again because ......... ?

Beware the Law of Unintended Consequences.

We could have a lottery, where some lucky individuals get a minimum wage of $100 / hour.

I was once on this commie forum where they were very seriously discussing a maximum wage. I didn't get to participate in the discussion because they banned my IP in two days.

Point is this minuscule wage of $1.25 in real money equates to over $14. Had we stayed on the gold standard people could still be making $3 hour and doing very well.

But you would miss out on the failure of the welfare state and lots of endless wars... So yeah. That's why.

How about Unions?

There's nothing wrong with unions, as long as the government does not provide them with power they would otherwise not have. There's nothing wrong with workers striking either, as long as a business could fire them as a consequence... Then it's a balance between demand and supply..

How about Unions?

Private sector unions are great. Great way to exert collective will in the free market.

Public sector unions should be considered seditious treason, anyone in such a union should tarred and feathered.

when did minimum wage become part of the the libertarian platform?

the shame, when libertarians agree with liberals. you're right, libertarians should support low wages, and embrace automation induced unemployment.
