The Hill: Ron Paul SHOULD run as a Third Party candidate...

I heard Medved say one day that the reason he doesn't like Ron Paul is because he didn't endorse McCain last time around, and that his supporters won't vote for the GOP candidate THIS time around.

Wah.

The hatred is already baked in.

If there was another real conservative in the race, I would. But, unfortunately, there isn't.

I think he should focus on getting the GOP nomination, because if he drops out of the GOP race now, to run third party, he's guaranteed not to win the general election. Sorry, but a third party is just not gonna win. If he doesn't get the GOP nomination, I don't care if he runs third party. He's not gonna win, so it'll be a colossal waste of time and money, but if that's what he wants to do, then more power to him.

not being able to win as a 3rd party does not make it a waste of time.
It would prevent a GOP win

assume they nominate Romney/Rubio; they win, they get renominated in 2016, and Rubio is the frontrunner for 2020

but if they lose the nomination in 2016 is open, for Rand, for Justin Amash, for Gary Johnson but importantly it is open.

plus winning as 3rd party does not necessarily mean getting the most votes. deals can be made (in the electoral college or the house)

Just got off the phone with a mainstream Republican who was a potential Ron Paul supporter. They wanted to know why Ron Paul was going to run third party. The damage is done.

And you said...?

I HOPE you explained that it was just more media propaganda against the only honest candidate running.

No kidding. The questions aren't damage. Failing to have an answer for the questions, that's damage.

glen i think you got it all wrong ron paul will not do anything. it will be the gop status quo that causes the damage by not nominating Ron Paul. If ron paul runs 3rd party .It will be the status quo gop that forced it to happen by their unethical actions!

easy answer the status quo gop has lied/mislead and even worked with the media to ignore ron paul. It will be the gop that forces ron paul to run if they alienate him like they have. You should tell your friend to tell the gop to look in the god damn mirror.

i gotta new idea ,if the gop alienates ron paul and fails to nominate him. Let us sell ron pauls indy run down the river after the gop has screwed ron paul in hopes the gop might nominate rand in 2016. another pipe dream for some folks, like i have 4 years to wait.. I trust the gop to do the right thing;) /note sarcasm!!!!!!!

If Ron Paul isn't the G.O.P. candidate, then there won't be a G.O.P. win in the presidential race. Flip Flopney won't win it, Cain couldn't get an independent's vote for a truckload of free pizza because he's a scary egomaniacal idiot, and he makes Perry and Bachmann look good. But they don't care about a G.O.P. win. And if we could just help the rank and file Republicans to understand just how unappetizing independents and other swing voters find the whole field except for our man, they'd understand that their AM radio buddies are all trying to keep Obama by afflicting the Republican Party with good old Nixonian rat$%&@ing sabotage.

There are literally hundreds of open Ron Paul supporters running for offices big and small across America in 2012. I'm still counting on Ron Paul winning the nomination, but if he does not, the perception (not the reality but the perception) of Ron Paul giving Obama the nomination will crush those Pauler candidates. Yes, the voters are that shallow. You don't seriously believe that won't crush us do you?

This. If Ron Paul is not the nominee, we won't NEED a 3rd party run to end up reelecting Obama.

Wow screw these people saying he should run for 3rd party. THAT is when he would have no chance. They are just trying to make people not vote for him in the primary. A media tactic to make him lose. Hardcore Paul supporters aren't that stupid but maybe some are.

They are talking about running 3rd party after the repub nomination if he does not get it....not about dropping out now.

So 2007 was a colossal waste of money?? Had Ron Paul not run in 2007 we would be nowhere today.

It's about getting the message out on a multi-year basis and growing year by year. Running 3rd party would gain so many new supporters.

You are quit right that Rand has a much better chance if obama is termed out in 16 and it is open but where you are wrong is that if the PAUL name is associated with that Obama win then Rand has no chance. RP would have killed it for Rand.

If RP doesn't win then the best scenario would be a squeaker reelection for Obama. I don't want him winning another electoral mandate.

When Ron Paul wins the Republican Party nomination, he will also be the nominee of the Libertarian and Constitution parties. There's your "3rd party run," MSM.

We don't have the same problem we had back in '08 when most Republicans didn't know who Ron Paul was. Now Republicans know all about Ron Paul and they still don't like him. He's not going to be the Republican nominee. A third party run is his only hope, and I think a perfect storm is brewing for a third party run to be successful.

Besides, if he fails to win the nomination then why shouldn't he run third party? We have nothing to lose at that point. This election is the last hope we have of getting Ron Paul elected and I think we should go all in.
